Imagine having all of the requirements to get into your dream college and you have been working hard all of your high school life, then they deny your application because you have not met the requirements for community service. Community service is a great thing to see because it shows college recruiters that you are responsible and a leader, but for a paying job this requirement does not seem realistic. However, I do not necessarily disagree with this idea. Community service builds character and when working with other people in the workforce some character is definitely needed. I believe that teens should perform acts of community service as it shows leadership within them, but a year of community service seems too drastic in my eyes.
For teens trying to get into college, a fair amount of community service is required. Most teens already know this, and if not already have shown up to a hand full of community service events. However, a year of community service sounds too far fetched for the average teen. I do not feel for the average teen that this should be a requirement; however, I believe that teens wanting to excel, or go above and beyond, should opt to get a year of community service. This does not mean I want to see a teen applying for college and be obligated to get in 8,760 hours of community service documented before being accepted. I think that a satisfactory amount required for a teen to get in would be at least one act of community service a week or a handful a month. This will develop the teen to want to get out and do work rather than think of a certain job to be a drag. A teen going out doing community service is seen as a better role model for the community than the teen staying at home playing video games or going out and partying.
Community service builds character and leadership, which we need more of in our society. Teens not looking to getting into college should not be required to get so much community service hours documented, but should get some hours documented depending on the job. For example, a teen looking to get a job at a burger joint should not be required to get community service hours, but a teen looking to get a job in construction or a manger or a more advanced job not requiring a college degree should require community service. The amount of community service needed should not be as much as a college student as they are meant to radiate leadership and scholarliness, but it should be up to a minimum of at least five acts of community service for a regular job.
I feel like this is a good amount of community service as it allows the job applicants to get a sense of leadership before entering the job. The amount of community service required should be dependent on the type of job needed or the thing they are applying for, but I feel that a year for a basic job is too much.
