Pros and Cons of Caesarean Section Delivery

Introduction

Caesarean section delivery is also called as C-section delivery. This method involves the deployment of surgery for delivering babies i.e. one or more. The Caesarean section delivery is often essential when there is risk on the life of mother or baby due to vaginal delivery. This may include issues with the umbilical cord or placenta, breech birth, high blood pressure in the mother, twin pregnancy, and obstructed labour.

The caesarean section delivery will be performed on the basis of previous history of C-section delivery or shape of the mother’s pelvis. After the C-section delivery, the mother might be go for the vaginal birth delivery. As per the recommendations of the World Health Organization, the Caesarean section delivery will be performed when there is a medical requirement, because in many cases this method of delivery saves the life of both the mother and the baby. But sometimes, C-sections deliveries are done without any medical need, or due to the request of the mother.

The duration of the C-section delivery is between 47 minutes to 1 hour. It may be performed by using spinal block when the mother is under general anesthesia or awake. To drain the bladder, a urinary catheter is used and abdomen skin is cleaned by using an antiseptic. Via the lower abdomen of the mother’s an incision of about six inches is made. By using a second incision, the uterus is opened and the baby get delivered. The incisions are closed by the stitches. As soon as the women is out of the operation theatre, or she is awake, she can breastfeed her child. The mother needs to spend some days in the hospital to recover and to go home.

Pros and Cons of Caesarean Section Delivery

Pros:

1. The Caesarean section delivery will reduce the risk of incontinence.
2. The C-section delivery is highly convenient for the women and decrease her stress relating to anticipation of labour.
3. For the first three months, the caesarean section delivery also reduces the sexual dysfunction risk.
4. During the C-section delivery, there is less chances of baby for oxygen deprivation.
5. This delivery also decreases the risk of trauma of birth to baby, which is sustained from passing via the canal of birth or from vacuum extraction or forceps.
6. The mother feels a good sense of control by knowing the information that when they deliver the baby and also plan for family assistance, work leave, furniture delivery and a baby nurse etc.

Cons:

1. The caesarean section delivery sometimes damages the bladder or bowels of mother.
2. There is also the risk of transfusion requirement or increase in loss of maternal blood.
3. If the due date of delivery is not correct, then sometimes there is possibility of pre-term delivery.
4. Due to C-section delivery, mother has complications risks from anesthesia (low blood pressure, allergic reactions, and pneumonia).
5. The mortality rate for the mother is higher in this type of delivery.
6. The C-section delivery also doubles the infant mortality risk.
7. Because of caesarean section delivery, the mother has high risk of blood clots and infection.
