Girl interrupted, is an extraordinary psychological film that talks about the true story of a young woman, Susanna Kaysen, who spent approximately two tears in psychiatric hospital. She is depicted as suffering from a mental illness which makes her to end up in a mental facility. While at the facility, she creates close ties with few different patients such as Lisa, who has a mild personality disorder. In addition, she puts up the specialist nurse. At first, she did not believe in having any illness, something which pushed her to resist the diagnosis and cure process. In the hospital she befriends Lisa, the girl who exposes her to several remarkable occurrences in and outside the psychiatric facility. The movie focuses on a collection of incidents of Susanna, who endured eighteen months of mental illness. I watched the movie on YouTube but it can also be downloaded via several channels.
Borderline Personality Disorder is a wobbly nature of interpersonal connections, mental self view, influences, and checked impulsivity, starting by ahead of schedule adulthood and present in several other settings. One of the most clear incidences that exhibited manifestation of the disorder in Girl, interrupted, was when Susanna shown self-destructive contemplations through an attempt of committing suicide with an Aspirin dose and alcohol. As a result, the facilities’ advisor asks her how she accessed the Aspirin container and Susanna replies with a comment that 'then they'd return' Mangold, 1999). The second incident was depicted when Susanna is taken to the emergency room with wounds and blood in her body, but she keeps telling the specialists that she did not have any bones in her grasp (Mangold, 1999). In several instances, Susanna wanted to stay in connected to avoid being abandoned. Almost at the middle of the movie, she recalls incidents of illicit relationships she had with an instructor and a fellow she met after graduating from secondary school. In the two relationships, Susanna experiences adventurous intimacy. However, Susanna stayed close to her former partners since she felt needed, appreciated and not dismissed (Mangold, 1999).
Further incidents were when Susanna would experience sudden shifts in temperament. At such scenarios, Susanna felt like not havi any feelings towards herself. At the end of the film, Susanna became preventive when Doctor Wick was informing her about the analysis. Susanna suddenly thought the doctor was intending to inform her that she was not going to improve. However, Susana proceeded to explain how 'she could not have cared less'. This implied that she could do whatever she thought was right. Besides, Susanna wanted to fill the felt gap that was curtailed by doing something she knew it was not correct. She felt that things were not taking the lane she desired them to take. As a result, she is accompanied by Lisa in escaping from the foundation to go and visit Polly who used to be with them. Both Lisa and Susanna knew that they could cause harm but they never bothered.
Girl, interrupted serves as an accurate portrayal of how various psychological disorders can be presented to the society in a more understandable way. The movie stood out in presenting all suspecting behaviors that may indicate Borderline Personality disorder. It clearly presentS those individuals with distraught endeavors to stay away from genuine or envisioned relinquishment. Subsequently, the film portrayed personality aggravations as a major characteristic of Borderline Personality Disorder patients. This characteristic is involves sudden periods of unstable mental self review or feeling of self. Beside, Girl, interrupted, explicates the repetitive self destructive behaviors common with Borderline Personality Disorder. In addition the film shows how patients of the disorder may be prone to various dangers or self ruining conduct. It outlines the consistency of the disorders manifestation in the patient-Susanna and Lisa.
The movie shows that Susanna's symptoms intensified as she geared towards adulthood, although everything originated from her youth occasions. The general characteristics exposed shows that Borderline Personality Disorder patients do not share the sentimental sentiments of seeing someone. However, the film proved interesting and shocking in the incident where Susanna refuses to flee with her boyfriend to Canada, which proves the existence of their shared adoration. As a result, the incident demonstrates a conflict with the current DSM-V. The movie evoked surprise through its portrayal of the characteristics and nature of Borderline Personality Disorder Patients.
I would recommend this film to be used in mental illness classes since it accurately portrays the psychological illnesses. In addition, it is not the common stereotypic film as it provides the true conception of what constitutes being in a mental facility. Also, it expounds on the power of friendship which creates emotionally thrilling scenes.
