A fitness coach is a person who educates, teaches, and guides a person through his/her fitness journey. A critical thinker and someone who understands you. Not the one who will say you have to sacrifice everything to achieve your goals but more on the lines of has a way out and can come to a medium which can give you results as well as help you overcome the obstacle as well. In this piece, I am going to list a few qualities that you should look for, in a coach before signing them up with them. They are: Motivation and Education:- This has to be one of the most important traits a coach should possess.
If a coach is not able to motivate the client, there is a good chance that the client won't follow the program. In addition, a great motivator will understand what you (the client) needs and set the right expectations so that the client does not end up disappointed when does not lose x amount of body weight in x number of days or month.
Communication:- The ability to communicate and understand what another individual wants is difficult and takes a good deal of understanding, listening, and cueing in order to be a good communicator. Communication should be a two-way road for the client and trainer. The coach should understand that the client is paying for the coach’s expertise, which means communication needs to be impeccable to make the program more efficient. In addition, your coach should be able to guide the client through the program as if you are blind. If you find a coach who can effectively do this, you found a great one. Professional. A coach needs to be professional at all times.
The client-coach relationship though is a friendly relationship, but it is still a business service. A coach should always be on his toes regarding the client’s program, be it changing the diet according to the client’s preference or taking regular progress updates. You should always get the service that you have paid for. If a coach is not paying heed to your needs and has started taking you lightly, it's time to cut the ties.
Individualized Programs : - In a time when most online coaches put their clients on generic cookie-cutter programs, it can be difficult to find a coach who is ready to put in the efforts to individualize your program for you because at the end of the day, your program should be YOUR program, not a template that has been copy-pasted to a number of people before you. In addition, your exercise program should be a result of some sort of fitness evaluation in order to measure progress.
Walks the Talk:- If your coach himself looks like he needs a coach and is not able to satisfy the queries that you might have regarding your program or in general, then you really should reconsider your options. Obviously, your coach does not have to be shredded to the bones, but he should in decent shape. You really wouldn't want guidance on fat loss from an obese person.
Experienced:- One of the most important elements one should consider when finding a coach is finding someone who has a great experience. While it is not the end of the world to work with a rookie trainer, it is much more cost-effective to work with someone who has been there and done that 100 times before. A little check on the history of your “would be coach” will go a long way to help you choose the right person for the job.
