The most common question to be asked. A frequent conversation starter; are you a cat or dog person? There are numerous reasons for owning a pet, you can choose to buy one as your close companion or to simply buy it to consider it as another family member to your home. Lots of elderly people are seen to own cats as they have recently retired and their lover or spouse has died and is need of company followed by love and affection. Everybody has their professions to owning different animals from snakes and lizards to hamsters and guinea pigs but over all the most ordinary pets to be in a home is cats or dogs unlike me who owns both and prefers my cats.

Why cats are better than dogs? First and main point of them all, they are all round way cheaper and more affordable than dogs. Although there is over 100 cat breeds that range from expensive to reasonable amounts does not change the overall cats characteristic features of a normal cat but only it's appearance. Cats don't particularly need to be entertained by toys but if they do cat toys are very cheap to buy or even free at the expense of making them yourself in a DIY way on the other hand dogs have a tendency to destroy their toys, they have to be made from much tougher (and much more expensive) materials—or replaced regularly. The main essentials you would need to buy for a cat is a collar/flee collar ( if you consider letting them be an outside cat), food and treats,a litter box, cat litter, a bed or something comfy yet another item that could be home-made and grooming equipment such as: claw clippers, a brush and a spray if necessary although cats don't particularly smell. If you are at work for the most part of a day owning a dog can be a struggle as they need to be taken out to do the toilet. Prioritising can be hard and the only option given is possibly hiring a dog walker if you live alone or whoever you live with is also out which can cost up to £10-15 for an hours walk on average in the UK.

Cats are perfectly content indoors. Not only are cats so much safer indoors, they are perfectly happy perched on a window for hours just watching the outside world and be fascinated by all the birds and bugs in the vicinity of their outside view or comfortably positioned on a sunny spot on the sofa for a perfect warm sleep. It's wise if you consider getting a cat to keep them as an indoor cat as they have a longer life expectancy of 15 years to possibly 20 whilst an outdoor cat only has the expectancy of 2 considering they have a high risk of facing the uncertainty of the elements, getting hit by vehicles, facing predators such as foxes and stray dogs and the possibility of eating something poisoned that's been littered or rotted. Another downside making the decision of your cat being let outdoors is you won't continue to see them as regularly. Dogs otherwise are in constant need of fresh air and exercise. It's almost impossible for dogs to have an indoors-only lifestyle as they need plenty of walks to be active. If your living in a house which doesn't include a front or back garden or access to nearby parks this may be reflected largely on your dog and be a huge challenge for yourself.

Cats are very independent when it comes to having good standards of hygiene considering they do it themselves without any help of their owner. Although cats having the ability to clean themselves does not mean you don't help them out by filing and cutting their claws down to appropriate lengths and brushing them to limit the amount of excess loose hair that gathers up on every nook and cranny of your house. The odd occasion you would have to wash your cat is if it's an outside cat which regularly gets dirty or for instance a scenario that happened with mine were he climbed up the chimney and came back black instead of ginger due to the coal he got smothered in. Dogs in this scenario absolutely love anything that smells bad to us for example faeces, garbage, dead animals and anything rotten which gives them the urge to sadly eat it or roll about in. Another factor of this if your planning on taking your dog on a day out they're most likely to roll about in mud or jump into the nearest patch of water there is for their own freedom and enjoyment. This resulting in you to make the effort to clean them in your bath thoroughly by washing ,conditioning and drying them. Dog shampoo and conditioner can also be quite pricey as you don't want to buy very cheap products as they might damage your dogs coat or make them itch. An Average of both dog shampoo and conditioner together comes to a total of £14-£34. Dogs are also required to be bathed/washed once a month.

What if you don't want to spend every second of your day with your cat? Cats are very understanding of personal space as they like it as much as yourself on particular moments. Imagine coming home from work after along stressful day not fond of having a dog at your heels jumping up on you with excitant and following you constantly where ever you go in your house for the rest of the night. Cats can be very independent when it comes to leisuring about your home to keep keep themselves occupied by jumping on top of fridge's and units and to find new compacted or large spaces to sleep such as under beds , your own bed , a specific pillow and your sofa. Cats can be very comforting when your just relaxing watching your favourite TV programme with a cup of tea with your feet up and a warm cute cat lying on your lap casually sleeping while you're caressing its head to make it feel loved. Whilst dogs are always wanting attention , to be played with, interacting with it and its toys and overall messing about when a main hobby a cat has is sleeping as an average for a cat to sleep per day is approximately 12-16 hours.
