Introduction

Introduction: The Sport movie I have chosen is “Remember the Titans”. It is a true story of a newly appointed African-American coach and his high school team on their first season in terms of team building technique is as a racially integrated unit. The movie based on a true story, is about T.C Williams High School football team. Background: The movie documents the trials and tribulations of the football team as two different cultures come together and attempt to unite to reach a common goal. The goal was to win the state football championship. As the players begin to accept and trust one another, they are successful in their pursuit of wins on the gridiron throughout the season, that trust is put to test numerous times. Situations arise that raise questions and concerns for those who involved, but each time the focus on the common goal of winning the state of championship allows them to move past the issue. Thesis statement: Ultimately in the movie the whole team is based on hard work, dedication, sacrifice, leadership and success.

Linear (Sequential) Perspective

Topic sentence: In the first stage of the movie was the forming of the team. Evidence & citing: Group member of the football team become familiar with each other and identified their group tasks. During norming the movie documents the trials and tribulations of the football team as two different cultures come together and attempt to unite to reach a common goal. In performing, the group becomes more stable as group members display a clear understanding and acceptance of their roles. The focus of group members is on the successful achievement of the group’s task rather than conflict among members and the leader. Finally adjourning is highlighted in the movie by termination of roles, duties, reduction of dependency, and breakup of the football team. Commentary: The five stages which I have observed in the movie were sequential and the duration of each stage was variable.

Personal Account

Topic sentence: One team I was a part of was a charitable softball team. I joined in last minute due to needing another team player that was female. It was a one day event, so our team development was cyclical because at the end of the day, we disbanded and never played with that same team again. The team formed two weeks prior with a few guys who played in a weekly softball league together. They worked together to find other team members to play to fill the roster. The day of the game, everyone showed up and warmed up 15 minutes prior to the first game. We played 6 games that day, coming in second at the tournament due to losing our last game. At the end of the day, we all went our separate ways. Commentary: Some of the team members still play in a weekly league together, however the full team has never played again.

Conclusion

Conclusion paragraph: In conclusion, the movie depicts how one team has the power and ability to change the ideas of an entire town and society. The titans were able to eliminate the racial division in Alexandria and create a more equal and unified community. Race and socialization are seen throughout the movie and play a big role in the Titans journey. Researching this topic and viewing this movie, has opened my eyes to the power and control that one group can have on a much larger group. It reinforces that anything is possible and all you need is determination and courage in the team building.

A fruitful line of research would involve that in this particular movie the influence of the group development on group effectiveness, such as the football team morale and performance and on individual member’s satisfaction or adherence in exercise and sport settings played a huge role.
