“Human is a sociable animal,” or “human is a sociable creature” is known as a quotation that belongs to Aristo. Starting from this point of view, every human being surely thinks that we as a human are not able to live alone. It means that any person should have any kind of relationship like familial relations, friendship, dearness, etc. In my opinion, the basis of these relationships is reliance, and I believe that I am not the only one who believes in that. However, even reliance is a strong bond between people, it also may be on a knife-edge. In other words, some people can easily trust someone, or some people may hardly trust no matter what kind of person you are you can trust someone, but you can begin to suspect someone easily too. Doubt is like a worm, once you feel it in your brain, always you feel it there.
In the poem of Ah, Are You Digging on My Grave, Thomas Hardy is telling us that the poet has a lot of doubts about people who are in his life. He is mentioning the problems that he has. His issue is being not able to trust someone. He firstly is taking his loved one, then he is taking his closest relatives, he is also taking his enemies, he lastly is taking even himself, and in conclusion, he says that he can trust nobody at all. Mr. Hardy also refers that he is more inclined to trust a dog. When he says, “What feeling do we ever find, to equal among human kind a dog’s fidelity,” or “Your little dog, who still lives near,” we become to ready to understand that he exemplifies that an animal, especially a dog is the exact sample of loyalty.
Nevertheless, I do not want to be unfair to Thomas Hardy. He also mentions that he makes someone suspect himself. He tells that he breaks the confidence of anyone in his life. When he says “Mistress, I dug upon your grave,” we handily find out that he is not impeccable too. Besides, he says “To bury a bone,” I think he mentions that he had broken the confidence of anyone to forget something.
Also, he says “I am sorry, but I quite forgot, it was your resting place.” Mr. Hardy admits that he has disquieted someone as breaking somebody’s trust. We obviously see that he has dug upon anybody’s grave.
Thomas Hardy, the British author, and poet was born in the first half of the 19th century and is known for his novels which are in Wessex that is an imaginary area of England. First, he was a draftsperson, then he gave up on education at university because of factual reasons, and he resumed his life as a priest. His stagy life is reflected in his works. When I read ‘Ah, Are You Digging on My Grave’, I feel the drama of his experiences in his poor life. Also, it suddenly reminds me of the saying of Shakespeare: “Trust, like the soul, never returns once it is gone.” I sincerely hope that trust will be with us forever.
