Values. Values are of significant importance in every individual’s life. Every single one of us has values, although they may differ, we all have them. Our values reflect what is important to us in life. They are often referred to as our personal guiding principles or life goals. Individual values reflect how you show up in your life and your specific needs-the principles you live by and what you consider important for your self-interest. Organisational values reflect how your organisation shows up and operates in the world. We are not always aware of our values, but knowing what they are can aid you in the making of decisions that are right for you specifically. Values vary from person to person, they are never the same for anyone.
As you can imagine, people who place great importance on exciting and new experiences will find it difficult to understand the choices of people who place greater importance on security in life and vice versa. Learning that people can have very different values from yours can help you to better understand others. Understanding that other people believe in a different set of values that guide them toward different decisions, may help you better understand that their choices may be different from yours, but they may be right for them.
During the exercise in class, I was quite stunned, because I found it rather difficult to prioritize my values. The exercise itself was not hard, especially for people who know themselves and their values. But as a young adult, with constantly changing values because of age and interests, I had trouble recognizing my values. In the end, of course, I managed to clear my head and write down the most important ones to me. As the order goes the value I put most importance on is Family, followed by Health, Freedom and Wealth. I prioritized them in this order because the family for me is above all, then the health of the people that matter to me and mine as well. Freedom – is something I value enormously, because I want to be independent and be able to make my own decisions and last but not least wealth.
Procrastination is definitely one of my flaws. Knowing I have time to get something done, I tend to relax and forget about it and of course remember when I have only a few hours left. This doesn’t necessarily mean that I procrastinate only academic work. I procrastinate everything that can be procrastinated. I am aware that this is a serious issues, because it reduces quality of the task significantly. The three main reasons I can address are lack of motivation, possibility of being able to do it later and being easily distracted. I have gathered some information on how to confront this problem but unfortunately it still occurs from time to time.
