How good it feels when we dress up according to our mood and comfortably every morning. We try look best in our own ways and style and also get to see various other styles and looks which motivates our creativity. On the other hand, we wear same dress everyday same as everyone which hide our individuality. In United States some schools have uniforms and some do not. It is assumed that uniform take away students sense of individuality and effects their childhood.
Firstly, many researches have been implying that school uniform is not good at some terms. According to the Journal of education research report published in 1998 by sociology David L, Brunsma and Kerry A. Rockquemore states that school uniform had made no changes in children school activities. ““I think some people think if you change the clothes, everything else is going to change magically,' he says. 'But it all has to be part of a package”. said by Saunders, who served as an administrator at county secondary schools with no uniform requirements”. Therefore, it is just an excuse that school uniform brings discipline and improve children’s school activities. On the one hand, Uniform is a dress it can’t reduce the bulling and indiscipline in school as the both terms are related to the behaviour of a student. On the other hand, it can bring bulling outside the schools as pride and many competitions between schools became each other rival and uniform make it easy to know the opponents.
Secondly, uniform control the student behaviour and his freedom in many ways. 'I'm opposed to somebody telling me what to wear and forcing me to wear an emblem against my will.' Said by Mike DePinto, an 11-year-old fifth-grader from Bayonne [New Jersey]. Many students oppose the school uniform policy as it makes them feel uncomfortable and take away their individuality. Furthermore, students believe that” wearing a uniform is like trapping them in a jail” as it takes away their freedom of expression and also separate the students according to race and class. According to Brunsman school uniforms bring no change in school activities Uniform policies also create the difference between student’s status which lower their self esteem and motivation. Uniform is not just about clothing it also includes some rules for example students are not allowed to colour their hairs, any kind of jewellery is not allowed, girls are not allowed to wear pants. In some kind uniform suppress student interest.
Thirdly, coast of uniform is also high and unaffordable by some families. Gale states that some parents think that the coast of school uniform restrict the equality of education by making school attendance more prohibited. As claimed by the 2019 report by (NRF) National retail federation shows that the average children from elementary to secondary school spend at lest $240 on cloths and $130 on shoes. (school uniform) Many schools have their own expensive and branded uniform which can only be purchased by the mentioned stores. There are many parents who are not able to afford the school uniform and some have to go out of the area to buy the uniform. In addition, some uniforms have the logo of school which make the uniform double the price from market which can make a family skip a meal of the day. “Jane Malcolm, CEO of Level Trust, a charity in Luton for local children living in poverty, said she had seen similar problems with a shift to branded uniform – 'which means you can only get it from certain expensive suppliers'. Malcolm started collecting school uniform donations two years ago, and said requests from parents had doubled over the past year. She had even started a 'naughty list' of state schools that had changed their affordable school uniform to one that could easily cost £250 per child, not including shoes or coats, she said”.
In conclusion, school uniforms should not be mandatory in schools as they can make school face some drawbacks for instance poor academic result, school violence, and less attendance as mentioned above. Moreover, for students it stifles the freedom of expression, individuality and creativity of a student. School uniform can not be a helpful guideline, as school already have many limitations on students. It is just an additional expense to parents and students. Wearing same uniform do not allow others to express their individuality and they lose their self regard so; uniform should be a choice to wear or not.
