Marshall Mathers, A.K.A. Eminem, is a well-known hip-hop artist. It wasn’t always this way, though. His childhood was less than ideal, and he was booed off stage several times before he ever became Eminem. He is known as one of the most controversial and best-selling artist of the 21 century. People may not know why this is. Marshall became who he is today, the iconic Eminem, through struggles and adversities.
Eminem’s childhood was turbulent. His father abandoned him when he was young, which left him to be raised by his mom, Deborah Mathers. She was thought to be on drugs and was physically abusive. She couldn’t hold down a job, so they moved often. This resulted in Marshall starting over at several different schools. Having no money and no one impacted how he carried himself. He was bullied severely. Marshall was beat up in the hallways, and shoved into lockers. In one case, he even sustained a concussion and temporary loss of vision when he was kicked in the school bathroom. After failing the 9th grade three times, Eminem dropped out of high school.
Although not good in school, Marshall did well in English and loved words. He would stay up late at night and study the dictionary. His love for words eventually grew into a love for hip-hop. Hip-hop became a creative outlet for Eminem, and a way to release his anger. He started preforming in underground rap battles in Detroit, with predominantly black artists. He was again made fun of in this part of his life because of his pale skin, bright blue eyes, and gawky personality. Yet he prevailed and started winning rap battles, becoming one of the most respected and liked artists in the city. Eminem later formed the group D12, with his newfound friends from Detroit. A year later, Eminem produced his first solo album, The Eminem Show.
Today, Eminem has since won thirteen Grammys, recorded seven albums, and has sold over 50 million of those albums. Some of his albums include: The Eminem Show, Encore, and Curtain Call. He has performed all over the world with other famous performers. Eminem’s emotions pour through his explicit lyrics that talk of his childhood, his mother, and his daughter Hailie. He raps about the issues in today’s world and his opinion on them. Eminem’s rhyme scheme, flow, and originality connects words in a way that makes you want to listen to more.
Eminem is without a doubt one of the most acclaimed rappers in hip-hop history. He used his rough childhood to become something great, and to be an inspiration to other struggling people in the world. Through his music you can feel tension, energy, and passion. His music unintentionally helps people by sharing his story. Marshall would not be Eminem without all that he has overcome.
