Right Decisions in 'What of This Goldfish Would You Wish' by Etgar Keret

Be careful for what you wish for. In the fable 'What of this Goldfish Would You Wish' by Etgar Keret, Sergei one of the main characters happened to find a magical gold fish that grants him three wishes. Since Sergei is a loner he now lives by himself and Yoni another main character in the fable ended up dead because of Sergei and it was at the moment Sergei has the choice to either save Yoni's life or save his wish for something else. Sergei decides to make the right wish and save Yoni's life. Sergei made the right choice because he is a kind, selfless and caring person. Although some might argue that Sergei made the wrong decision on saving Yoni's life, the reason Sergei made the right decision on saving Yoni's life because Sergei does not deserve to go to jail, Sergei is not a murderer, Sergei is a selfless person and his intentions were not on killing Yoni.

Even though Sergei is a loner he is not a selfish person and truly cares about people, that's why he made the decision to save Yoni's life. In the fable 'What of this Goldfish Would You Wish' in lines 135-137 it states 'The first wish Sergei used up when they discovered a cancer in his sister. A long cancer the kind you don't get better from. The fish undid it in an instant-the words barely out of Sergei's mouth.' This comes to show that Sergei is caring and puts others first. Although Sergei had just 3 wishes he decided to use his first wish on his sister instead of using it on himself. Sergei also uses his other two wishes on other people that's what it comes to show that Sergei made the right decision.

Jail does not have a good look on anyone especially in this case Sergei, he doesn't deserve to be put in jail for a mistake he did. The reason why Sergai hesitated to wish Yoni back to life was because Sergei didn't want to lose his only friend. Sergei's only friend, the fish was supposed to return back when Sergei use his last wish and that's not what Sergei wanted he wanted the fish to stay and be friends with. In lines 185-186 it states 'if he ever found a talking goldfish he wouldn't ask of it a single thing. He'd just stick it on a shelf in a big glass jar and talk to him all day, it didn't matter what.' In lines 162-163 it's also states 'After the last wish, Sergei won't have a choice. He'll have to let the goldfish go. His magic goldfish. His friend.' Sergei only wanted a friend and now that's gone because of how selfless he is, he always puts people first even though Sergei is a kind of a loner guy.

Although others may argue and say that Sergei made the wrong decision because he wasted his last wish and that he could have got away with it. Sergei had a plan to hide Yoni's body and to just save his last wish. In lines 169-170 it states 'I'll tie the kid to a rock and dump him in the sea.' Even though Sergei could have got away with this he knew what the right thing was even from the beginning when he used his first wish on his sister. He then used his second wish on his ex girlfriend's son. Finally his last wish was used to save Yoni (a stranger whom he just met). Sergei's heart was always extremely caring despite the fact that Sergei is not much of a people's person.

Sergei made the right decision and the only right decision he can make. He is not built nor made to go to jail, If Sergei was uncaring and selfish he would have went with the plan to dump Yoni in the sea and get away with it. Sergei knew what was right and was wrong so he went with the right choice. Even though Sergei was thinking about a different plan to get out of that situation he used last and final wish not on him, but on someone else and his two other wish went to two other people also. Sergei could have said since this is his last wish he will use it on himself and nobody else, but no he proceeded to use his last wish to save Yoni's life.
