Robert Bryson Hall is an American rapper, singer, songwriter and music producer better known by his stage name Logic. Coming from a broken family, he has had unfortunate experiences as a child. Growing up, he witnessed his brothers selling drugs, his father buying those drugs, his alcoholic mother and sisters getting beaten up by men. However, even at that age, he tried to see the positivity of the situation and made those experiences a lesson as to what not to do with his own life.
To escape his abusive mother, he left home when he was 17 years old and took up two odd jobs. He found relief through music, and started to express himself with his raps. He doesn’t shy away from writing about his experiences in his songs, which makes most of his songs extremely personal, but he never glorifies his tumultuous upbringing. He has been heavily influenced by Frank Sinatra’s vocal jazz, even though he is more into hip-hop music. Quentin Tarantino has been another big influence on him. He got recognition through his mixtapes, “Young, Broke & Infamous” and the “Young Sinatra” trilogy. Both his studio albums, “Under Pressure” and “The Incredible True Story”, have received critical and commercial success.
Logic was born as Sir Robert Bryson Hall II on January 22, 1990, in Gaithersburg, Maryland. His father is an African-American, while his mother is a Caucasian. He was named after his father, Robert Bryson Hall, and the “Sir” in his name was added by his mother, and is not a title. He had a troubled childhood as both his parents were alcoholic and addicted to drugs. Not only that, his brothers were drug dealers, and taught him how to produce crack cocaine. The family lived in the West Deer Park neighborhood, where a quarter of the residents were below poverty line.
He himself smoked marijuana early in his youth, and had serious cigarette addiction. However, he had since then given up marijuana and alcohol, other than an occasional glass of champagne, but is still struggling to give up cigarette. He attended Gaithersburg High School in his neighborhood, but was expelled from there before he could complete his graduation. According to him, he started to miss classes and failed in many subjects, which caused his expulsion. He became interested in rap and hip-hop music when he was 14 years old, after watching the Quentin Tarantino movie “Kill Bill: Volume 1”. During this time, he also met Solomon Taylor, who soon became his mentor and encouraged him to write lyrics on instrumental beats.
Robert Bryson Hall started performing on stage in 2009, under the stage name “Psychological”. With his first unofficial mixtape, “Psychological – Logic: The Mixtape”, he started to perform opening acts for stars like Pitbull, EPMD, Method Man, Redman, and Ludacris. On December 15, 2010, he released his first official mixtape, “Young, Broke & Infamous”, which received positive reviews and established him as a budding rapper. The success of it helped him sign a deal with the independent label “Visionary Music Group”. The mixtape was downloaded over 250,000 times online. In 2011, he released his second mixtape, “Young Sinatra”, the first of his “Young Sinatra” trilogy. It was a critical success and provided him with exposure on various publications. In his third mixtape, “Young Sinatra: Undeniable”, released on April 30, 2012, he went more personal, mentioning in his lyrics incidents like his expulsion from school, his father’s addiction and his mother getting stabbed.
He said that he wanted to write lyrics for people who cared about them. The release was supported by his first national headlining tour, the “Visionary Music Group Tour”. In May 2013, he released his fourth mixtape, “Young Sinatra: Welcome to Forever”, promoting it with a two-month-long headlining national tour, “Welcome to Forever Tour”. He was praised by fans and critics for his adaptability, while the mixtape was downloaded over 700,000 times online. After signing a record deal with “Def Jam Recordings”, he released his debut studio album “Under Pressure” on October 21, 2014.
While he had worked on the album for the last two years, it was recorded within two weeks and contained the critically acclaimed singles “Under Pressure” and “Buried Alive”. Following the success of the album, he made his television debut on “The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon” and performed the song “I’m Gone”. On November 13, 2015, he released his second studio album, “The Incredible True Story”. The experimental album has a running storyline detailed within the album through the singles “Young Jesus”, “Like Woah” and “Fade Away”.
The influence of filmmaker Quentin Tarantino is evident throughout the album. His latest release is “Bobby Tarantino”, his fifth mixtape, which came out on July 1, 2016. It included the single “Flexicution” which became his first solo “Billboard” Hot 100 charting single. He has already announced the title of his third studio album, “AfricAryaN”, which will talk about his mixed ethnicity.
Robert Bryson Hall’s debut studio album, “Under Pressure”, was received by critics with positive reviews. He was praised for his blunt storytelling, while the album peaked at number 4 on the “Billboard” 200. By the end of 2016, the album had reached Gold status, selling over 500,000 copies in the US. “The Incredible True Story” turned out to be one of his major works. He was more involved in the production of the album, which was praised by critics. The album debuted at number 3 on the “Billboard” 200 and ranked number 1 on the “Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums” chart, surpassing his previous album, which ranked 2nd.
In early 2013, Robert Bryson Hall was featured in the “XXL” magazine. He was included in the publication’s annual “Top 10 Freshmen List”.
Robert Bryson Hall is not on talking terms with his mother, who, according to him, is not only prejudiced, but also racist, and is not a good person overall. His father was not around when he was a child, but he reconciled with his father after he became a famous rapper. While he does believe in God, he is not religious. According to him, his mother, who was overly zealous about religion, disgusted him so much that he avoids religious fanaticism. Around the time he was 16, he got involved in a serious romantic relationship with a girl. However, after they broke up five years later, he had the epiphany that while all his efforts at maintaining the relationship failed, the time and effort he puts into his work doesn’t get wasted. This made him more focused on his musical career. In October 2015, he married singer Jessica Andrea. They had been dating for over two years.
Robert Bryson Hall chose the stage name “Psychological” because he wanted to make music that challenges the mind. He eventually shortened it to “Logic”. He also refers to himself as “Young Sinatra”, as Frank Sinatra’s work has had a huge impression on him.
