Rock n’ roll was originally was a form of the blues in the south, during the colonial period at church as a form of worship. Back then it was a mostly black person’s song, while today it’s more of everyones music. Rock in the 1950’s was also sold as race music, it was directed toward blacks.
Although the music did reach whites, it was only the poor whites living in the lower social classes. There are many people to call the leaders of this counterculture, but they’re a few that stand out more than others. Some examples of these leaders could be Linkin park, who mostly talked about commiting suicide, Aerosmith for promoting sex, and more. The goals for these artist were simple; make music, have fun, do drugs, have sex. Although some of the cultures rock broke were good things to have been broken. Elvis Presley was one the first artist to combine all music types, rock, pop, folk, electrick. Since Elvis Presley combined all music types people were free to listen to all music and there were no longer that racial barriers blocking people from listening to other cultures type of music.
However though, rock did have some very heavy non-normal norms. Rock would promote things that people in the past would have been hanged for if it was the 1500’s. Rock own slogan has sex and drugs in it causing some people to be so offended to try and stop rock. Another effect rock had was increasing hippies. Rock was used by hippies during rallies, for example vietnam movements. Rock also had festivals like woodstock that would have a giant effect on the youth of a population. It dramatically increased the use of LSD, marijuana, and other party drugs. Rock’s main belief it seems would be having sex with everyone, this belief heavily challenged the religious populations causing them to freak out and try and stop anyone from listening to rock, their kids for instance.
