Accountability is defined as an obligation or willingness to accept responsibility or to account for one’s actions in Webster’s dictionary. With accountability in leadership, you have to be willing to accept responsibility, be responsible for someone or something at the state of event or situation, and be willing to account for your own actions. In the military, a leader takes charge and takes accountability for all of these characteristics.

The U.S. Army is responsible for numerous of operations such as inventories, safety, work procedures, and just being able to keep track of military personnel at all times. For example, when you have SI if you lose it you should have to deal with the punishment instead of all the soldiers. The Army follows strict, firm, and structural policies or laws. We have to wear our uniform to the standard also able to perform to the standard. Accountability plays its role in the Army be being the “back-bone”, which holds everything together by keeping chaos or commotion at bay. Accountability is also the obligation of a military officer for keeping accurate record of properties, documents, or funds. If accountability fails then it can cause a lot of disorderly conduct amongst the Army and society itself.

Being responsible for someone or something at the state of event or situation can be a challenge. People lives are in our hands and they depend on us for national security. Being a in the Mississippi National Guard we would have to control a riot in our town if one happens. University of Mississippi had a riot because of the re-election of President Obama. Mississippi National Guard was once called to help control a rowdy crowd over four hundred people. “Some students yelled racial slurs and profanity in anger over Mr. Obama’s re-election,” the statement said. Responsibility is about expectations, whether you are in business or the military. If you expect something from one of your people for a project, but he or she does not deliver on time, it can become a problem. ‘I’ll be disappointed, and it spreads negativity. In the military, lives depend on keeping promises and commitments”, in reference to Lee Ellis, a retired Air Force pilot who runs a leadership consulting and training firm, told IBD.

“If you fail to plan then you plan to fail” is a motto that I live by on a daily basis. It is just like when you take a PT test and say I am going to fail the run. You are setting your mind to already to give up. As a leader, you must be accountable for your own actions. A combination of values and attributes enables you to see what to do, decide to do, and influence others to follow. You must be competent in the knowledge and skills required to do your job effectively. In addition, you must take the proper action to accomplish your mission based on what your character tells you are ethically right and appropriate. When giving direction, you make it clear of how you want your Soldiers to accomplish a mission. You prioritize tasks, assign responsibility for completing them (delegating appropriate authority), and make sure subordinates understand the Army standard for the tasks. One must decide how to accomplish a mission with the available people, time, and resources. It is your subordinates’ or your fellow soldiers’ job to carry out your orders. In order to do that, they need clear direction. As a leader, you must give thorough direction to allow Soldiers to use their initiative, abilities, and imagination; and they will surprise you with the results.

In the military as in the business, education, or public service world, people follow leaders who treat them as human being and consider their personal needs. Good military leaders at all levels know that attention to details can make the difference between life and death. Importance of accountability in the army is huge. It plays a very important role in the military leadership. By being accountable for your own actions, you will be part of the glue that holds everything together in leadership. With these characteristics, I have everything I need to be a great leader in the military.
