In today’s world, technology is constantly changing and growing. There are many developments being made in the field of Artificial Intelligence as well. That is because nowadays we are interacting with computers in one way or another, wherever we go we use a computer to guide and help us. This is also the reason why big companies are focused on making the computers more and more intelligent, in order to make the human lives easier. In this essay I will discuss how AI has evolved throughout the years, what is expected from it to achieve in the near future and some of its applications today.
Intelligence to me is the ability to apply different skills and knowledge in order to solve a problem. Nowadays we are experiencing an enormous change on the development of Artificial Intelligence. The birth of Artificial Intelligence is believed to have happened while scientists tried to create an artificial brain. In 1956 AI research was founded as an academic discipline. In those years Alan Turing, a famous mathematician has also published a paper in which he expressed the possibility of coming up with machines that can think. In the early days robots were considered the future of Artificial Intelligence but today it has been integrated in our lives through various technologies. Some examples may include, Amazon’s Alexa, Tesla’s autonomous car and also Google’s DeepMind which can play games and do different behaviors without relying on pre-defined algorithms. Even though AI is a very wide field, Narrow AI is the only form of artificial intelligence that humanity has been able to achieve so far.
Artificial Intelligence is expected to have a huge impact in education as well. Currently computers have the ability to grade simple tests such as multiple choice and fill in the blanks. But soon they are supposed to take over for the written response work as well. The personalized learning is getting a lot of exposure as well, in some countries students have the chance to customize their courses based on their strengths, skills and interests. Machines will replace teachers on helping the students to customize their learning paths in the near future. Another example on how AI may completely change education is that nowadays we have companies gathering an enormous amount of data, by using this data we may create various systems which can be in a good help for students. One example may be a recommendation system for the college selection process, with which students will not have any difficulties on choosing their degrees.
Another area where Artificial Intelligence can make the difference is the healthcare. Some disease areas are already implementing the AI tools. Clustering techniques are used in identifying cancer in patients while analyzing the x-ray results. Stroke is one of the most frequently occurring diseases around the world that affects around 500 million people. In recent years, AI tools have been used in lots of stroke-related studies, such as the early detection and diagnosis, treatment and the outcome prediction and prognosis evaluation. This is very helpful for every one of us because this way we can always be a step ahead and prevent multiple deaths. The only drawback of the AI in healthcare is the continuation of the data supply from healthcare environments.
Artificial Intelligence and Software Engineering have many things in common. They both deal with modeling real world objects. In the last decades these two disciplines have not been linked with each other that much. But today, several research directions lead to an intersection between AI and SE which are beginning to build new research areas. In the future it is expected that AI will transform many major areas of Software Engineering. These include the Software Design, Software Testing, Automatic Code generation etc. It is supposed that artificial intelligence will create faster, more efficient and less costly software development cycles. For example Software Agents are very important research objects in Distributed AI as well as in agent-oriented software engineering.
Nowadays, AI and SE intersect with each other rarely, but they are in the path of growing really fast. Many techniques and methods from these disciplines support the practice and research in the respectively other research area. An example may be AI in software testing. Automation tools are used in the software industry in order to reduces repetitive manual work and increase productivity. Many softwares are presented that can automate the testing of a large amount of code. This has made possible that programmers are more focused in developing new features than spending time on fixing bugs.
We can clearly understand that there is a strong tie between artificial intelligence and software engineering which offers massive potential for the future.
Artificial Intelligence has the ability to solve many real world problems. It has also been shown that AI is pretty good and accurate when tackling these problems, even sometimes it can be more accurate than the current methods. In the field of Software Engineering we can clearly see it’s impact. Writing code today is way easier that it was 20 years ago. In the near future we will not be out of jobs but its just that these programming jobs will be way more sophisticated and powerful. Machine learning techniques are a very good example that AI can train itself from several minutes to a week and be able to solve many tasks. The only thing that may concern me and the rest of the world is that what if and AI agent be able to replicate itself and create another agent. That sounds really scary because at that point humans will not have control over them.
In my opinion as long as the human intelligence stays above the AI we are safe and we should continue on developing it more and making the human lives better.
