I want to share an overview of my whole professional life how it motivated me as a person , why I took the decision to get my Master’s in Computer Information Systems after my Bachelor’s in Computer Engineering, why I chose Rivier university for my Master’s, how do I feel about this decision at present. I will provide a summary on how I would like to use the experience & knowledge gained during my Master’s to excel in my future endeavors and stating how my current course of Organizational Dynamics is guiding & encouraging me to accomplish my goals.
I am Sansriti Mishra and did my Bachelor’s in Computer Science from Mumbai university & graduated in the year 2013.I graduated with distinction in all my subjects. I was selected for my first job before even I completed my graduation and got picked up by one of the elite software American companies Oracle to work as a quality analyst with them. I always had the inclination towards understanding the management /business technicalities involved with every launch of any new product or software technologies. This is my goal to share my transition phase from a simple software engineer working in India to management student at Rivier university learning the business & organizational behavior ethics. In my opinion this Master’s will groom my personality & open new career choices for me as software professional.
I started my professional career in the information technology sector in the year 2013 with Oracle Financial Services Pvt Ltd. The first position which I held in the company was of a quality analyst and my role was of a tester or problem solver. I used to test user interface websites, software technologies, prepared business requirements documents for the project for the client, creating document to track & log defects and conveyed the correct information about the errors encountered so that theses bugs can be fixed by the developers making the software application bug free and ready to be used live by the users. I also used certain principles of software quality assurance of the software development cycle. I was appreciated at regular intervals by my clients & managers as I was successful in finding important loopholes in the projects assigned to me. I worked in Oracle for 2.5 years and gained a lot of expertise, skills in the technical domain. I used to work for Japanese bank as my client. Initially my team was small, we were only a group of three people and then we expanded to 6 people working for the team in the next one year. Here I came across one of the important aspects of organizational dynamics in reality which was the effect of team size on my project deadline. I realized this when my team was small, we were able to meet our project deadlines on time and at the same time were able to control the project budget and cost without any wastage of time. I also observed this while I was working with my team that they respected my views, ideas and were a good listener although we all belonged from different culture in India and followed different customs and traditions but still had the moral ethics towards each other. Another organizational dynamic aspect I experiences while working was in our company the management team used to conduct surveys for every product technical team in which they asked questions to the employees and asked for feedback from the employees which positively motivated the employees to share their concerns and in this way my company employees felt more connected & dedicated for their work. This promoted the most vital emotion in the employees the feeling of employee engagement which is beneficial foe the organization as employees perform to the best of their abilities. I developed the skills to enhance my knowledge & expertise on the technical, I started taking more conference calls with the international clients in Japan that gave the extra edge over other employees. My work helped my project in receiving acknowledgement by senior executives in the office as well as from the people who used to work offshore om some other client websites. The product which I was working was used by the Japanese bank and the application was used by actual customers of that bank. In this way my work had a substantial effect on the people which defines the aspect of task significance (how important an employee’s job is within inside or outside the organization)in organizational dynamics.
The team with which I was working had employees of all ages. I personally experienced the benefits of working with people with high skills & experience who had worked for my company for more than past 10 years. They gave the guidance like how I can improve my performance over time, which new technologies I should concentrate on to improve the quality of the product of the project, provided me with valuable feedback from time to time. Because of all these factors I was able to work as a multitasker for my project and won accolades for my project. I was able to communicate with people from different generations (organizational behavior challenge) and learned how to develop the work-life balance. In my opinion I have found that old employees are more reliable and dedicated for their organization (Organizational Dynamics Concept).
In few scenarios I expressed some stressful situations too when I worked day – night before my product release which created emotional stress for me. To overcome this problem I organized a formal meeting with my manager and put forth my concerns to him, he listened to my issues & frustrations and provided me guidance to improve my skills. This proves that effective verbal communication between the executives and the its employees is extremely important for an organization’s growth & progress. I received appreciation from my manager, clients and by my colleagues which motivated me to put more efforts in my work and boosted my self-esteem (Motivation at work( organizational dynamics concept)). When I was working in my previous company, I was unaware of the concepts of organizational dynamics. But now when I look back to my professional days, I realize that each day of my professional life had scenarios related to organizational behavior.
I came to U.S.A after marriage after leaving my job in India at Oracle. I was at home for more than a year. I started to feel the need to get back to work but I did not wanted to go to my previous domain which involved more technical expertise. I wanted to get acquainted with the business knowledge so that I could explore more options in my professional domain. To educate myself more on this I decided to pursue my Master’s at Rivier University in Computer Information Systems.
In my course I studies courses both technical & business in nature. Last term I studied business subjects like Accounting for managers, Global Finance for managers & currently I am studying Organizational Dynamics. All these subjects have helped me immensely in understanding how large organization works in real time environment, how big productive operations are carried out , how a company’s policies are establishes, how skillful employees are retained. Five years down the line I want to see myself working as a Product Manager for some big product-based companies like Facebook & Amazon. Product manager is an important organizational role in any company which requires the ability manage cross functional teams. These managers should have the deep knowledge about the product and should possess the ability to make important strategic decisions. All these important organizational aspects I am learning in my current term subject of organizational dynamics which teaches organizational behavior by strengthening its resources and promoting strategic development & better business ethics. By pursuing my Master’s gives me an opportunity to interact with people coming from different parts of the world. At Rivier University in my class I have students from countries like Nigeria, Ghana, Canada and thus grooming my communication skills which will help me in my future professional where effective verbal communication (Organizational Dynamic Concept) is important for accomplishing goals. Eventually after my Master’ s I hope to see myself as a person who can face any type circumstance in life with high motivation & enthusiasm and more emotional stability.
The job scenario for product manager position is very competitive. A product manger is a person who is involved right from the thought of an idea till its actual live execution. It includes the responsibilities to research and analyze the information about the product development, target customers, core market for the product, searching license issues, to ensure the products safety & motivating team continuously to perform their best , having effective verbal/non-verbal communication with the team. I am still lacking in this section of skills required .I have given few interviews for internships for the Product Manager positions and received this feedback from the employers that I need to improve my nonverbal communication skills like body language (Organizational Dynamic Concept), my decision-making skills(strategic decision making), my pressure handling skills (emotional stress). I still have two semesters left for my Master’s to complete and I strongly believe that whatever time I have left I will be learning new aspects about the real time organizational environment culture everyday and in the last will emerge as a successful Product Manager professional.
To achieve my goal of becoming a successful Product Manager I have decided to I will apply for curriculum practical training and will try to join some big product based company to get acquainted the with skills, expertise needed to be a successful Product Manager. There are certain pre requisites for that. First, I have to be well aware of all the essentials which means try to read more books on product management by successful product managers working at companies like Google, Facebook. To be a good listener is one of the most important requirements to be a product manager so listening skills (organizational dynamic concept) should be practice & developed over time. A product manager task is tedious task as there are requests from clients, requests & question from his team , guidelines from the boss all this requires an individual to be mentally strong with no emotional stress and should be highly motivated towards their work. The leadership & analytical skills are also needed to support the product manager role. A product manager should know how to handle cross functional teams at the same time. By the help of these organizational dynamics concepts I have full faith that I will achieve my goal eventually one day.
The study of Organizational Dynamics taught me how is the culture & environment in real time in an organization works. It focused on the behavior of employees and how they perform their assigned responsibilities & duties. It stated how important it is to consider the physiological & emotional needs of the employees to keep them motivated and dedicated towards their job and the organization. It taught me the importance of teamwork, workforce motivation, goal guidance/orientation that is prevalent in business environments currently. The future for any business is dependent on the development, improvement of the people who works for the company who are the most valuable assets an organization can possess, and this subject will help me in gaining expertise in this domain which will help me in y future job of product manager.
