Significance of Democracy in The United States

For ages, the term, the government of the people by the people and for the people has been used numerously to describe a democratic kind of government. The United States has acted as the best model for a democratic government. Over the years, since the times of the founding fathers, the US has developed most of their policies in a manner to move more power to the people through the way of the vote. It can be well considered that most of the development that has been witnessed in the United States has been as a result of the stable political environment in the US which has been so due to the democratic system of government in the country. The democratic system of government has been subject to reproach from many quarters due to the idea that it is hard for a nation to move forward when the power of decision making is spread amongst many people. However, the democratic system of government has proved to be far much better than many another form of governance. Hence it is the most suitable system for a country such as the US.

Democracy is highly significant to the United States because it offers the people the power to make decisions that directly affect their livelihood (Halperin 13). In a democratic system, the people can affect the changes and progress that they desire for their country. This is mostly done through the ballot. In a typical US election, candidates appear to the citizenry with proposals of ideas that they seek to effect throughout their time in leadership. In a similar effect, the citizens assess the policies that the politicians suggest to them and then decide who fully represents their ideologies and who seems trustful enough to affect those ideas. Through this, the citizens can affect their progressive ideas efficiently. Additionally, citizens elect leaders who represent them at a national level and who can lobby for more resources to the grass root level. As such, it can be concluded that the democracy is a necessary form of governance that is high to the United States.

Democracy gives people the right to have a voice on issues that they feel are not best suited for their lives (Weale 45). In the United States, people have over the years come up with rallies where they picket against actions of the government. In so doing, people do not get beaten up for picketing on the roads. Instead, they are listened to and where applicable change is put into effect. People have the power to speak out even against the people at the helm of power without fear since democracy puts all people at a level ground so that they can speak out against issues that do not favor them (Adams 13). Freedom is undoubtedly a blessing to the American populace because it offers them an opportunity to speak out against the issues that ail them.

In conclusion, the US should make more efforts to advance democracy in the country. This is because it is necessary for the survival of the country. As aforementioned, democracy offers people a voice to speak out against activities by the government that does not favor them. This happens because democracy puts all people on the level ground in a situation whereby nobody has the power to cause pain or harm to the other no matter the amount of energy they hold. Additionally, democracy gives power to the people through the vote. This control enables them to choose the kind of change their desire to put into effect in the country.
