The concept of a simple machine is defined as the simplest device that performs work, applying a single force to a single load, and generally acting as a building block in developing more complex, compound machines. In total, there are six simple machines: the lever, wedge, screw, inclined plane, wheel and axle, and pulley. Each of these machines serves a unique function, and understanding their applications can help us utilize them more effectively in our daily lives.
A lever is a simple machine consisting of a stiff bar that rests on a support and is used to lift or move objects. A screw is an inclined plane wrapped around a pole which holds things together or lifts materials. A wheel with a rod, called an axle, through its center lifts or moves things. Pulleys are used to change the direction of an applied force. The inclined plane is a flat surface with ends at different heights, and its purpose is to reduce the amount of force required to move an object. Wedges are used to separate, hold or lift an object.
