Simple machines are discussed in this essay as they are an important aspect of our everyday lives. These devices have the ability to apply force, making work easier by allowing us to push or pull over increased distances. The concept of a simple machine is defined as the simplest device that performs work, applying a single force to a single load, and generally acting as a building block in developing more complex, compound machines. In total, there are six simple machines: the lever, wedge, screw, inclined plane, wheel and axle, and pulley. Each of these machines serves a unique function, and understanding their applications can help us utilize them more effectively in our daily lives.

A lever is a simple machine consisting of a stiff bar that rests on a support and is used to lift or move objects. A screw is an inclined plane wrapped around a pole which holds things together or lifts materials. A wheel with a rod, called an axle, through its center lifts or moves things. Pulleys are used to change the direction of an applied force. The inclined plane is a flat surface with ends at different heights, and its purpose is to reduce the amount of force required to move an object. Wedges are used to separate, hold or lift an object. What makes a simple machine truly simple is its ability to allow us to do the same amount of work by applying a smaller amount of force over a greater distance. This reduction in force makes our lives easier and more efficient.

Compound machines, on the other hand, are a collection of simple machines working together to perform more complex work than individual simple machines. They offer a greater advantage than simple machines alone and are the most common type of machine. Examples of compound machines include bicycles, pliers, wheelbarrows, and scissors. Bicycles, for example, utilize pedals and wheels to make wheel and axle systems, brakes are levers, and the parts are held together with multiple screws. A mechanical advantage is the ratio of the force produced by a machine to the force applied to it, assuming there is no friction. It is used in assessing the performance of a machine.

There are two types of mechanical force: actual mechanical advantage and theoretical mechanical advantage. The actual mechanical advantage will be less than the theoretical value by an amount. The length of the material being used as a lever and the amount of force applied are factors that affect a lever's mechanical advantage. A lengthy lever with much more force will have a different mechanical advantage than a short lever with little force applied.

Efficiency is another important concept when examining simple machines. It is a measure of how well a device transfers energy into the form we want, such as kinetic or thermal energy. An ideal machine is a simple machine where the power input is equal to the power output of the device (wedge, lever, screw, wheel and axle, inclined plane, and pulley), meaning that there are no losses. In this case, the efficiency is 100%. However, real devices have efficiency less than 100% because rigid and frictionless systems do not exist. Material, formal, efficient, and final causes are the factors that can cause differences in efficiency between an ideal and real machine.
