According to Scientific American, 17-year old Randy Gardner in 1965 set an all-time world record all for a science fair project as part of a sleep deprivation experiment by staying awake for 264 hours that is 11 days. The first day his eyes had stopped focusing later he lost ability to recognize objects by touch he became moony and uncoordinated. At the end of this experiment he had trouble with concentration short-term memory became paranoid and started hallucinating. Gardner recovered with no mental or physical damage you see getting the right amount of sleep can make a big difference in a person's life today.

I'm going to talk to you about how much sleep a person really needs and why we need sleep so before you go to bed tonight this that might come to mind about what time you want to fall asleep at and wake up back just to be getting the right amount of sleep. You might be wondering right now how much sleep do we really need well sleep requirements varied by individuals. There is a recommendation that a falling sleep requirements adults need seven to eight hours of sleep at night whereas adolescents need ten hours there are a few sleep inducing chemicals that play a part in our sleeping the rise in sleep induced chemicals such as Addison and melatonin puts a person into a light sleep making our breathing and our heart rate slowed down as well as our muscles to relax. This is when DNA is repaired and our body is refreshed happening during the non-rapid eye movement or REM sleep. You may be thinking why do we need sleep and so much of it well here's a few pointers that will change your mind about the importance of sleep.

Why do we need sleep? Sleeping comes with physical and mental get benefits for example sleeping is a building process it restores the body's energy supplies that have been depleted through our daily activities getting the right amount of sleep our body rebuilt and restores our muscles that we have by secreting a growth hormone.

Spending all day long thinking and creating takes up a lot of our mental energy when we sleep we restore our mental energy to just like our phones you can be plugged in to reach their full amount of battery at the end of the day we need to be recharged as well. Liz Miller the director of Bethel Health Services stresses constant sleep deprivation will greatly affect your ability to retain information which affects your grades which then leads to stress along with several other harmful consequences that David Wolf, states for example one sleep deprivation causes you to become more aggressive deterring your interpersonal responses and making you get upset easily.

Secondly, It also weakens your immune system causing you to have a higher risk of catching a cold or an illness it will cause you to gain weight by raising levels of a bio chemical called ghrelin, an appetite stimulant lack of sleep will increase type 2 diabetes and raise your blood pressure. Not getting enough sleep can impair your brain activity by blocking neuron production which increases to stress levels sleep deprivation leads to memory loss by deteriorating the brain and lastly, getting the proper amount of sleep will increase risk of cancer now that you are a more awake when it comes to sleeping you now know about how much sleep is enough and why we need to sleep and as you can see getting the right amount of sleep can make a big difference in a person's life overall getting a good night rest is the right thing to do in order to be successful and succeed as a soon-to-be-college student.
