Why Did I Choose This Song? This song is really fierce and I love that about it. This song to me is about being confident about what you do or say no matter what others think of you. I love the message and the tone of the song. It reminds me of myself now. I used to be this really fragile person but once I started high school, that changed. I became super confident which improved my life because I wasn’t getting pushed around by others anymore. This situation makes me really relate to the song, especially in the line “And yeah I know how bad it must hurt to see me like this, but it gets worse.”About Demi Lovato Demetria Devonne Lovato was born on August 20, 1992 in Albuquerque, New Mexico, United States. She started off her career as an actress first starring in Barney & Friends, following many Disney Channel movies and TV shows such as Camp Rock and Sonny With A Chance. Her music career took off as well during these projects, when she released her first album in 2008.
Demi had been a victim of bullying which motivates some of the lines in Sorry Not Sorry referring to her haters. She also suffered from drug use, depression, and an eating disorder in 2010, right at the peak of her career. The rough situation she’s been through during this time is also the motivation behind some of the song--she’s showing off how she’s doing much better now, how she’s much happier and how all her enemies now want to be her friend.About the Song The general message of the song is about being confident. The message is implied in many ways. The lyrics itself symbolize that you shouldn’t care about what others think of you and be confident in doing so. The line “Baby I’m sorry, (I’m not sorry),” directly translate to that message. She’s not sorry that she’s in a better place in her life, and she’s not sorry that she’s above her haters now. She refers to her haters in many lines, and she is recognizing how all of them wish they were her friends now and never said all those things to her in the first place.
Basically, karma caught up to them and they’re below her now but for a reason. For example, there are lyrics that say “Feeling inspired ‘cause the tables have turned, yeah, I’m on fire and I know that it burns.” Those lyrics are Demi talking to her haters in a very confident showing-off way. Poetic Characteristics The line “Bein' so bad got me feelin' so good,” is a form of Oxymoron. The two lines “Bein' so bad got me feelin' so good; Showin' you up like I knew that I would,” is rhythm; it has 10 syllables in each line and has a rhyming pattern of a, a. “Now, payback is a bad b**ch,” is a metaphor. “Can't have this, can't have this (ah); And it'd be nice of me to take it easy on ya, but nah,” follows a rhyming pattern of a, a. “Baby, I'm sorry (I'm not sorry),” is an oxymoron. The line “And yeah I know, you thought you had bigger, better things,” contains alliteration. “Bright as Technicolor, I can tell that you can see,” is a simile. “Baby, fineness is the way to kill; Tell me how it feel, bet it's such a bitter pill,” follows a rhyming pattern of a, a.The Music Video The music video for this song takes place on June 29th at Demi’s house. She threw a houseparty and invited all her friends, and they filmed everything that happened to create the music video. The idea behind the music video is that they’re giving everyone an inside look into Demi’s life and they’re showing off how great and fun it is. This is effective in supporting in proving the point that she really is at the top now.
