As one of the poorest regions in India according to the GDP of the other states, Bihar is not in a very good state economically. An economy primarily focusing on agriculture as well as service, there is also the troubles of slavery as seen in the couple of videos we watched. The main contributor to this is both the villages in which children may not be monitored all the time, but also the fact that gathering slaves is very inexpensive compared to how much work the slavers may get out of the various imprisoned people. Especially in an area where it may not be possible for parents to confront slavers or travel all of the hundreds of miles it takes to actually retrieve their kid, and worst of all is the fact that they will likely never be able to pay for the freedom of their children.
The videos we watched in class offered a lot of incite into the lives as well as the trials that many third-world and even first-world countries must face in terms of slavery. Children are especially prime targets for slavers, as these are young people who can never fight back for their entire childhood, and certainly won't be able to pay for their own freedom and will be stuck for the rest of their lives as a direct result. Children can get brainwashed and indoctrinated into this sort of mindset that what they are doing is right, and that they must work for as long as possible in order to best provide for the monsters that took them from their family and stuck them into these hazardous conditions. Threats and acts of violence are taken upon these children in order to make sure that this sort of indoctrination simply gets pushed further to the point where the children are so scared that they cannot possibly deny anything that is thrown at them by their workers.
Sadly, despite all of these conditions that the children must face, this sort of work that they are forced to go through has shown to make a profit for both the slavers and the buyers who obtain the goods that these children make. The goods and services that are produced, such as the carpets that were produced in Bihar, are all bought by first-world countries such as the UK or the USA. Not only are these goods bought, but to make matters worse is the fact that these goods are inflated immensely in price compared to how much money the children may make. All of the slaves can be paid with a few dollars, while the items are sold for hundreds, even thousands of dollars to a buyer in another country.
Worst of all is the fact that these slaves are charged for every single thing they may want to do, thus they don't really get paid but instead are "provided" with food and breaks in exchange for their own freedom. If a slave wants to go to the bathroom, eat something, or even just take a nap, they are charged in some way shape or form. Even if they do pay for these services in exchange for their freedom, the services are still extremely poor in quality. Going to the bathroom requires either a bucket or urinating off the roof, and eating something boils down to getting an extra piece of stale bread. Otherwise, they are chained to a work station and have to work for about 20 hours every single day for the rest of their childhood, or maybe even for the rest of their lives. Sleeping for such a short amount of time and being forced back into work, or else they get beaten and threatened by their slavers until they get back to work.
The economy of Bihar is fairly poor, and it makes the retrieval of the slaves much more difficult. Bihar is very much focused around a service-oriented economy. The state does have a leading role in producing various foods and fruits, as agriculture is the other leading economy they possess. Despite this, the state was still extremely in poverty, partially because of a failing governing body as well as economic backwardness. There is a lot of poor development in various factors, such as a developments in irrigation as well as power. Another reason may be the inability to use more modern technology, which is sadly something out of the control of the state for the most part. With such a poor economy and drastic poverty, it does put some insight as to how difficult it can be to regain your child's freedom from the slavers who took them away and why there is so many children kept in slavery. Luckily, there have been groups that are dedicated to freeing these children and getting them the proper education and training that they need to get their life back in order.
One of the greatest events to come to Bihar is the fact that there are now groups of people entirely motivated to freeing all of the slaves, as well as making sure that they are able to live a successful life despite these massive setbacks. In general, the world is trying to phase out slave labor and making sure that more and more companies are selling products proven to not use any sort of slavery at all, which is a transition that the entire world has to slowly take in order to stop this monstrosity.
