The Vikings society was Shaped by the sources they had in their land and agriculture This caused a deficiency to feed the growing population. This affected them by the way they lived. For thereafter they were people who raided and were sea rovers. They also had many technologies which they used for this purpose of travelling.
The Vikings were a people with not much of good land for farming. Only 3 percent of their land was suitable for farming. The produce which they had for their food was meat, cereals, barley, rye, oats, fish, milk, cheese and butter; vegetables, such as peas, beans, cabbage, onions, and an assortment of herbs; and wild fruits, such as apples, pears, cherries, and berries. (H, 01)Three countries Denmark, Norway, and Sweden were called as Scandinavia. The Coastal areas had high, craggy mountains running down the peninsula and much of their ground was rocky. (HistAlive8_Ch03, 01) Norway along with parts of Sweden were very mountainous, with multiple forests which provided plenty wood, even though this area had fertile soil which was rare. The Scandinavians had plenty of Scandinavian fur and timber skins and walrus tusk ivory. This was the main reason Vikings set off to search better farmland than their countries offered. The Viking were clever people who had many devices for travelling. Though the Viking didn’t invent everything. Other Europeans and Greeks invented many of the technologies they used. The Cartography was one of them which was invented in the second century. Through the middle Ages it was used to draw more precise maps which eased exploring.
They were a people which did not use modern technology. So, they used Compasses to find out directions. the Astrolabe helped sailors, to figure the distance from the North or South from the equator. This was invented by a Greek. The Viking Travelled long distances and carried many substances.
The knar ship was for Atlantic journeys. It was capable of holding up to 24 tons. The knars usually carried livestock and stores to Greenland. The ship can travel about 75 mile in one day with 20-30 men. This ship was used for long journeys and dangerous trips. Through these technologies they used, all can understand how their land affected them and through this how they became sea rovers. (Advances in Knowledge and Technology, 2019)
Through this all can understand how geography shaped the Viking. By the technologies they used and by the natural resources which their country had to offer. For their country was only able to feed a sufficient amount of people. Also, their technology was manly suitable for their travelling.
