The Advantages and Disadvantages of Why College Athletes Should Be Paid

Across the globe, collegiate sports are growing and are still offering important financial incentives for schools, universities and even partners. This has led to a lot of discussions about the athletes' pay. Some people believe the student-athletes have received a scholarship from colleges while others say they can leave the college early on for athletics. The articles discuss the advantages and disadvantages of the topic and also some thoughts. 

In my paper, I would want to talk about how the N.C.A.A. has signed a legal law, that states, that All student-athletes will be paid to play in the new Fair pay to Play Act. Pay to play is a problem because it will have very negative effects in California for student-athletes and wider universities. On how other universities are going to do about paying their athletes as well? Following on being paid now is this going to make athletes be more motivated to get exposure to the money and fame too young or does it make them more motivated to play and be known. This is a very interesting topic because if UCLA is going to start paying athletes other Universities are going to have to keep up and pay as well if they want the recruits. This topic intrigues me because as a student-athlete, I'm looking to make the money. 

In 1906 the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) has started. They formed as the Intercollegiate Athletic Association during the founding of the organization and only adopted their current name in 1910. Their duty, when they were established in 1906, was to create play and eligibility rules on American football, otherwise, football would be stopped because it was viewed as hazardous to a game. NCAA functions today as a general legislative and administrative authority for male and female athletics intercollege and is becoming an organization of several million dollars. The principle of professionalism was considered crucial for the association when the NCAA was formed. For their respective sports, the NCAA needs all student-athletes to be amateurs. Professionals can be paid for their athletic competitions, registered with an agency or private organization, or use their athletic skills for their income in any manner, leading to clear differences between student-athlete and employer. The NCAA's greatest resemblance from its origins to the present day is its importance in amateurism. Just last year, NCAA appeared in court to preserve the rules of their amateurism against petitioners who thought that the value of a scholarship violated federal antitrust laws. The NCAA also expanded its values, which would contribute to pay to play by changing the laws on amateurism and professionalism. In the LA Times article, they say, 'The new law allows athletes the right to hire an agent and make money from their 'name, image and likeness,' as professionals do. Denying that right is disingenuous at best in the 21st century. 'Amateurism' today is simply a label slapped on a system in which players in revenue-generating college sports work 50 to 60 hours a week in exchange for an education they are rarely allowed time to pursue'. 

The text I am looking at is a Newspaper from the Los Angeles Times, that describes what is going on with the pay to play-act. To interpret how much are they getting paid to how long they can play for can be interesting. Recruiting freshmen to college is going to have to change now that they are starting to pay their athletes. The California law claims that less money will go to school because booster donations decrease and support for individuals will go up instead. The smallest thing the N.C.A.A. could do for those who give the N.C.A.A. and its school's so much money would be to pay them the minimum salary. This offering is unbeatable because the teams with the powerhouse players are going to want to get paid, so they are going to leave one team to go where they can play to get paid. This can change how we view sports at a young age because when I was younger, I never thought I could go pro. But now with being able to be getting paid in college, kids can now try harder in high school because this allows them to look forward to college instead of dropping out and trying to find a side job. This is a controversial topic because what if they get paid too much what will happen to the NFL? Also, will college ticket prices go up as well, and how much, and how will this affect D2 and D3? I think it is fair for colleges to pay to play in this century because nowadays student-athletes can be overwhelmed by the college life experience just because having to get used to balancing class, practice or games, and a job can be fairly hard for most students. Therefore, I would want to be paid to play in college so I wouldn't have to overfill my schedule. Colleges all around are going to have to change the way they recruit their new players if they want them to be on their teams starting in the year 2023. 

As the multi-million-dollar company, it is now, all but the student-athletes who are essential to the community have gained from amateurism. Historically the NCAA has taken the view that the 'amateur' principle is needed to make college athletics competitive and famous. Furthermore, the NCAA would not operate without student-athletes, raising the issue of why student-athletes are not viewed the same. The suggestion that the NCAA will pay for its college athletes has lately caused a lot of debate. 

The ongoing debate over whether to pay student-athletes has had a very negative impact on the NCAA. Universities and coaches have come behind NCAA's back to convince players to participate in their program due to the need for student-athletes to maintain their amateur title. Therefore, shoemakers who try to persuade AAU (Amateur Athletic Union) players to attend schools that they support. This has contributed to the dismissal of players and coaches, including prison time and more. For example, the FBI, for example, 'has been investigating current corruption in college basketball at the University of Arizona in the past season. They found recordings that a coach paid $10,000 a month for a university to play'. The assistant male Basketball Coach was sentenced to three months in prison and a two-year supervised release after a thorough investigation This is because schools are not allowed to pay their players when most perceive it as more than justifiable. CBS says 'The NCAA has also lost the interest of many top secondary education opportunities who have decided to take other routes due to this debate. Later Darius would not enter the G-league draft to train for the NBA instead. His bold action started a movement. R.J. in May 2019. According to ESPN, Hampton was the fifth high school student to take a college class and instead spent a year in Australian League playing per basketball. 

This topic can really make an impact on how the new generations have a look at college. Being a college athlete questioning if it is worth it. Since the Head of the NCAA head manager has made so much money, I can only see most of the money only going to the 'starters or stars' because they are going based on exposure. The word that can describe pay to play would be greed. Greed is an intense and selfish desire for something, especially welsh, power, or food. With the NCAA paying college athletes I can only see people going to college for money. People are going to strive harder in their sport because they have a shot of not having to pay a loan when they are fresh out of college. It is an inordinate desire t acquire or possess more than one needs. The degree of the ordinance is slated to the inability to control the reformulation of wants once desired needs are eliminated. Just like the NCAA with how they would pay the desired athlete who is blowing up compared to a benchwarmer or nonstarters. Greed is used for attacking someone wanting undue material wealth even if it is necessary to feel better spiritually, economically or otherwise than someone else. The object of greed and all its acts may be that of depriving or obstructing certain people of potentials and resources thereby, subtle and tyrannical, or otherwise negative. The purpose of such dangerous potential bargaining in questions of questionable coincidence can also be to defend or combat it. As a result of gullible activity, any expenses or burdens related to that accumulated cannot sustain themselves or more generally result in a backfire or destruction. So, the level of an excess of covetousness refers to its associated vanity, malice or burden. Possessions and powers to fulfill desires are sought in the NCAA. Athletes are only partly satisfied with the fulfillment of their wishes and this partial pleasure that fans and increases the flame of desire rather than extinguish it. Therefore, greed still seeks an endless area of exploration and makes the individual disappointed. And this makes them think are they really in it for the love of the game or are they just in college for exposure and money. Greed, in all of its forms; greed for life, for money, for love, knowledge has marked the upward surge of mankind.

After all, being paid to play your favorite sport, or being greedy and in it for the money, the NCAA has completely changed the way kids will view sports and how they want to pursue their dreams. From having to have to get good grades to go to college to laws that allow athletes the right to hire an agent, and make money from their name, image and likeness as professionals do have impacted the ways the NCAA will have to respond to all the media. 

In today's time we watch college football for enjoyment and because since it is getting the athletes prepared for the pros, we can see why they would start paying them like amateurs because they are dedicated to the sport. But again, bringing in greed to the cause, people are more likely to be in it for the money now rather than the love of the sport. Since a range of opinions exists about payments by athletes, more appropriate decisions should be made in the near future to enable both college athletes and other students to decide their future on a freeway, without limiting them. Regardless of the decision, the rights and needs of college athletes, as well as the opportunities available for their future lives, should be taken into account.
