This essay will be analysing the theme of resilience in the film,Finding Nemo. The film ‘Finding Nemo’, produced in 2003, is an American computer-animated comedy-drama and adventure film, which was written and directed by Andrew Stanton. The main characters of this film areNemo, who is kidnapped by divers, Marlin, who is Nemo’s father. Dory, who is a fish that helps find Nemo, Gillwho belongs to the tank gang, and lastly Bruce, Chum and Anchor who accept fish as friends. The content of resiliency is shown by the characters Gill, Nemo, Dory, and Marlin in the film.
In the film `Finding Nemo’, Gill is one of the elders who displays resilience countless times, he encourages everyone to never give up on finding solutions for their problems. Some examples of this is when Nemo was stuck in a thick pipe, on the day he first entered the aquarium, Gill simply says, “You got yourself in there, you can get yourself out”. “Alternate wriggling your fins and your tail”, suggests Gill again, “I can't. I have a bad fin”, replies Nemo,quitting. “It never stopped me, just think about what you have to do”, encourages Gill.This quotes indicates that Gill believes that nothing can stop you to be successful, which is why he motivates Nemo to be resilient. Moreover,to face the challenge and get through it successfully himself, Gill never gives up on inspiring Nemo that he can do it with his own moxie. Through the challenges they faced, Gill never stopped believing in Nemo, others, and himself to findsuccess in hopeless situations. This reveals that he has a growth mindset. Nemo faces situations and he gets through them with his self-motivation and the others motivating and encouraging him to never give up, which helps him stay resilient and have a growth mindset throughout the film.
Dory is a fish who suffers from memory loss every ten seconds or so. She expresses resilience bystaying optimistic while finding Nemo with Marlin in the deep, dark ocean. The examples of this are when Marlin has lost the goggles that had the address to find his son Nemo, Dory sings “When life gets you down do you wanna know what you've gotta do? Just keep swimming. Just keep swimming. Just keep swimming, swimming”. She sings this quote multiple times in the film when going through challenges. This reveals that Dory never gives up on trying to uplift everyone and encourage him or her to keep going so that no one is pessimistic or quits. She has found a solution that when life gets you down, ‘to just keep swimming’, which represents that no matter what, Dory never gives up on swimming through and being triumphant. Through the numerous obstacles they face, Dory never gives up on being optimistic and encouraging others to stay optimistic when finding Nemo.
Throughout the film, Dory and Marlin show resilience by being courageous and tenacious when facing obstacles through their journey to find Nemo. An example of this is when they were struggling to find their way to Sydney Harbour in the deep, intense ocean. Dory asks Marlin, “you wanna get out of here?”, “Yes”, replies Marlin. “How we gonna do that unless we give it a shot”, suggested Dory. This quotes demonstrate that even though they were in the extreme dark water and unaware of how to get through, they never gave up and lost their ambition to find Nemo. Overall, when facing hopeless situations, they had the spirit to never give up, which made them resilient when going through numerous challenges.
Although, the content of resiliency has been presented countless times in the filmFinding Nemo, by the characters – Gill, Nemo, Dory and Marlin. Gill is an elder who never stops encouraging others on trying and gaining success in hopeless situations. Nemo is a character who never gives up on his stamina and determination when facing obstacles. Dory is a fish, who is always optimistic, when facing problems and never stops cheering everyone else to keep going. And lastly Marlin is someone, who is determined to find his son Nemo, even in the tragic situations he never gives up. This demonstrates that all of these characters have displayed resiliency efficiently; they all have a growth mindset and are very tenacious throughout the film.
