As someone who works with children, there must be multiple different precautions taken into account for the safety of the children while making sure of our own. The After School Program at Mountain Road ensures the safety of the employees by filing Emergency papers which include information pertaining to emergency contacts, medical information, and the like. At the entrance of the school, there is a buzz-in-button that everyone must use before three o’clock to enter the building which will notify the front office that an individual is there; after three o’clock, the After School Program office opens its door and a worker there will check every individual that enters. If an individual is seen walking around the school itself, we must call our employer through our walkie-talkies, and they will deal with those individuals directly to ensure the safety of both the workers and the children.
There are many rules regarding the safety of the children, from inside the school to the playgrounds; the kids, no matter their age, are not allowed to run inside the building or throw balls in the air while inside the facility. Outside, they are not allowed to swing on the monkey bars in case someone will break their arm, go past the edge of our peripherals, or run onto the road. In the gym, they are not allowed to hang off the bars on the walls or lay in the middle of the gym floor, in case another child steps on them. Every child must ask their teacher before going to use the restroom, get a drink of water, or go down to the ASP office for a bandaid or some ice. After informing the teacher that they would go down anywhere besides the restroom, the teacher is obligated to tell the ASP office through their walkie-talkie to notify them that a child is going in their direction. Not only do we watch the children and what they do, but we also have a schedule that every grade must follow, so that in case of an emergency, our employer knows where we are at all times.
While in the computer lab, they must wash their hands before touching the materials and they must leave their water bottles and toys at the front of the room. They must shut down computers correctly, tuck in their chairs, and place their earphones on the computers individually. In the gym, they are not allowed to kick a ball into the air in case the ball flies up to the ceiling and hits a panel which could damage the facility and/or come crashing down onto the ground, hitting an individual. In the cafeteria, they must clean up their areas where they have snack time and when using the crafts material, they have to have a teacher rip out the drawing pages, so others may use the rest of it, while keeping order the box of crayons, markers, and etcetera, so there is no damage to the material. If students damage materials laid out for their use, we must call our employer so they can give the children repercussions.
Before beginning our jobs as teachers in the After School Program, every potential employee must sign a confidentiality sheet which states that we will not expose or state personal information to outsiders of our vocation. While we are allowed to use our cell phones for looking at the time, we are not allowed to spend extended time on them as we have to look out for the children and their safety. If there is a weather extremity, then the After School Program will close for that day or for that period of time before it even begins, and instead school itself, will either be let out early/canceled or everyone will ride the bus home.
