The American dream if often and can be described as given the opportunity to lay a foundation for your future, along with making something out of one's self. As the United States is now a melting pot, regardless of your ethnic background you have the opportunity to achieve anything you want in life as anyone else. Those who have sacrificed financial, and family factors come to this country with little to no money, however are driven have a perseverance to achieve success and wealth. In order to achieve ones vision of the American dream, they must have the motivation, and resilience for the struggle that is tied along with it if that is lacking or missing, it's simply a dream.

This American dream we all crave is attainable, and everyone is given the opportunity to make something of the cards that they have been dealt with; some may require more work, and mental strength. Some of the obstacles one may face is social class (working poor, middle class, etc.), the most common now is ethnic background/association. Equality comes in many forms, however that is not always the case so you must have the extra drive and thick skin to make it. The struggle of achieving can often take a toll on one's mental state, as feeling as failures for not obtaining or seeing no progress to achieve it. In most cases it's not always the person working endlessly hard, there are still odds working against them, often inequality due to ethnic stereotypes, and ignorance.

The Social stratification refers to a society’s ranking socioeconomic tiers based on factors like wealth, income, race, education, and power (Lumen Learning, 'Introduction to Sociology'). In the United States everyone is under the impression that everyone is equal, as previously states only equal to a degree. While the conviction of ones diligent work ethics and ability, not biased treatment or societal qualities decide social status. Self-exertion promotes the conviction that individuals have control of their own social class they associate with. Despite of sociologist who believe stratification is not solely on one's disadvantages, however about efficient inequalities dependent on gathering group enrollment, classes, and so forth. The structure of how society influences an individual's social standing. Despite the fact that people may support or battle inequalities, social stratification is made along with supported by society in general.

Despite of one's social class does not define one's identity, as a social system, stratification divides people as to uniting them. Stratification is an institutionalized and intersectional form of inequality. Elites maintain inequality for their own advantage, prohibiting many of the most talented and intelligent people from making favorable contributions to the society and sometimes giving less talented, less intelligent people tremendous amounts of power. Even where some people do get to move up in the rankings, this situation is so infrequent that elites still manage to retain control, and the possibility of mobility ensures that the disenfranchised remain docile: They assume that if they don’t succeed, it’s their own fault. My personal beliefs are similar to Christopher McAll’s thoughts about social mobility. There are two types of people out there in the world one who allows their social class define whom they are and put little to no effort to better themselves, and those who define their odds and strive just as hard through all obstacles to not allow their social class define whom they are/future.

The continuing question asked is if culture plays a role in social mobility. Most people believe being privileged will always remain, with little to no work. However, much like anything in life it is capable of being lost. One must continue to work endlessly to maintain their social class. People see and experience it often when someone who has it all and is privileged is now going down this is called downward mobility
