India has been plagued with the Caste System for a very long time now. The Caste System in India is a much more strict version of how the United States looks at classes such as upper class, middle class and lower class. While what class you are in doesn’t necessarily matter in America, your Caste in India determines what food you eat and who you marry. There are many people in favor of getting rid of the Caste System. Abolishing the Caste System in India would result in many positive outcomes because of the elimination of favoritism, the power of freedom of choice, and corrupt police toleration being stopped.

'Why Violent Video Games Shouldn't Be Banned'?

One of the biggest issues regarding the Caste System is favoritism. Untouchables, or Dalits, are the lower class of India. Untouchables are treated with disrespect and considered as slaves who aren’t worth living. Some people find it unclean to even look at Dalits. In addition to the hatred the Dalits receive, There are many horrific crimes against them too. Some of the statistics are staggering. According to Hillary Mayell, “There have been over 25,000 crimes against the Dalits alone.” To put this into context, Mayell goes on to show that “Every day two Dalits are murdered, three Dalit women are raped, and two Dalit homes are torched.” For this to happen every day to Dalits, this just proves that no one deserves the kind of punishment they receive. Losing the Caste System would take away the discrimination that they receive every day. The Dalits face segregation like the African Americans faced in the 1950s. While Martin Luther King Jr. helped stop that, India needs someone to stop the segregation, and someone like you could fit that role. Without Caste Systems, freedom of choice would be in place and it would be much better. As said before, depending on the Caste System you are in, some Castes can’t eat meat, as said in The Caste System article, “The high caste Brahmins maintain strict vegetarian diets… eating meat may be accepted at lower caste levels.” According to the article called The Caste System, they say “People are expected to marry within their caste…” If the Caste System was removed, marriage wouldn’t have to depend on the castes, and this could also decrease the hate crimes because if a Dalit and a Brahmin marry, the hate crimes would be less if there are two different castes involved because there’s only one Dalit involved in the marriage. Also, it is a known fact that when someone has more freedom, their quality of life is better. With the Caste System removed, it would be much easier for India to be safer and more enjoyable for Dalits, Brahmins, and Kshatriyas. With the Caste System abolished, police favoritism will be no longer tolerated at any level. Everyone will be equal, so any form of favoritism will be strictly prohibited. If there still is favoritism, it will create an uproar because while now no one is equal with the Caste System, everyone will be and the police officers would be charged with discrimination. According to Hillary Mayell, “26 police officers were convicted in court for dismissing cases of murder, torture, etc.” In one year, 68,160 complaints were filed concerning various acts ranging from murder to robbery, and 62% of the cases were dismissed. Out of all the cases dismissed and all the murders ignored, only 26 police officers were charged. Mayell is trying to make a point that people are neglecting the abuse that the Dalits get from different castes, random people, and the people who should be protecting them, the police. Mayell also includes this newspaper heading that says, “Dalit Tortured By Cops For Three Days” and “Police Egged on Mob to Lynch Dalits.” This is abuse that no one deserves, including the Dalits. Once the Caste System is removed, none of the abuse will be tolerated and it will result in a much safer, crime-free experience for every Caste.

Mr. Modi, the Caste System should be abolished. Dalits are being targeted and killed every day for being in the Caste that they are in. Freedom of choice is an improvement of quality of life. Police brutality should not be tolerated like it is with the Caste systems that are present currently in India. There are some strong reason why I believe the Caste System should be abolished.
