The Aspects of Naturalist of The "New World"

Naturalist writers, such as William Bartram and Philip Freneau both address deep approaches when integrating their intimate views in which reflected nature. The two naturalist share viewpoints that include moving away from an imaginary take on the natural universe. Instead of centering nature purely on religious views, both Bartram and Freneau didn’t advocate the ways of God to man. The realist view of nature and not allowing religion to affect their ability to see things without prejudice are aspects of the “New World”.

Bartram was a naturalist; in which, wrote about his connections with natures. William Bartram logic towards nature begins with his involvement as a Quaker. Quakerism was the most influential aspect in relation to his views about nature. A Quaker’s ideology towards nature was positive, unlike the Puritan’s views. “The Quakers believed that man could come to an experiential knowledge of God through nature” (Clarke 440). Bartram didn’t allow his religious background to interfere with his ability to be objective. He had the ability to describe an accurate account because of his close attention to detail. In his writing, the methodical and religious background had aided in his outlook on nature.

Philip Freneau was considered one of the first American poets. Freneau writings consist of similarities to what is known as modern qualities. He was a part of a movement that had focused on the beauty of nature instead of the religious aspects of nature. Freneau’s profound enthusiasm towards nature had intertwined with God’s existence but he states: Path of right, fair virtue’s way. Its own felicity to make. This universally extends. And lead to no mysterious ends. (9-12)He had believed that individuals were surrounded by religion. A few of Freneau poems does exhibit some form of teachings but the emphasis of God is converted.

There are many qualities of a great naturalist writer. The ability to separate religious views and portray a realistic view of nature is aspects of the “New World”. William Bartram and Philip Freneau had expressed their take towards the natural environment. The writer’s works depict nature at realist and their deepest connection with nature.
