Harry Styles Essay Example

Harry Edward Styles was born February 1st, 1994. He was born in Bromsgrove, England. He grew up with his mother, Anne Twist, Robin Twist his stepdad, and his sister Gemma Styles. When Styles was just seven years old his father Des Styles left. He grew up in Cheshire and studies at Holmes Chapel Comprehensive School. Whilst at school, Styles had been in a band called White Eskimo.

While Styles was 16 in 2010, he auditioned for The X Factor’s 7th season, he sang a version of’ Isn’t she beautiful ‘ by Stevie Wonders.’. Styles had been put out before the final, but Niall Horan, Liam Payne, Louis Tomlinson and Zayn Malik were called back and brought into band with four other boys who had also been cut off from the competition.

They were later named ‘ One Direction ‘ after Styles sent a text to the boys saying he liked the name, it caught on and the name was retained. They went on to the final coming in 3rd place after Rebecca Ferguson and Matt Cardle. One Direction signed a £ 2 million record contract with SYCO in 2011, shortly after they released their first single, ‘ What Makes You Beautiful ‘ in September. One Direction’s first album ‘Up all Night’ came out later in the same year. The album charted and did incredibly well for it being their first album of their career.

Their second album, called ‘ take me home, ‘ was spent 1 week at number one, and was number one in 80 countries. This album had the hit single ‘Little Things’. Styles had dated the singer Taylor Swift so there was a lot of speculation that the song was written about her. At the same time Styles was living in Ben Winston’s house for 20 months whilst he was looking for his own house in London.

In 2013, they released a documentary called ‘ This Is Us, ‘ it was a concert / documentary, the release of this was followed by their 3rd album ‘ midnight memories, ‘ which included the songs ‘ Best Song Ever ‘ and ‘ Story Of My Life, ‘ both songs being the first songs that Styles had ever co-written and released as a single on their album. In 2013 Styles and Liam Payne, a member of One Direction became ambassadors for a cancer charity called Trekstock and raised more than £800,000.

In November 2014 the band released their last album with Zayn Malik called ‘Four’. They became the only group in the 58-year history of the billboard charts 200 albums chart to have their first four albums debut at number one. In August 2015, the band confirmed rumors of an extended hiatus following the completion of their fifth and final album as a band ‘Made in the A.M’. Over One Directions career they collected 181 awards including 28 TCA’s, 7 Brit awards, 5 Aria Music Awards and much more.

The Beginning of His Solo Career

In February 2016, Styles left One Directions management company, Modest Management and went on to join Jeffrey Azoffs Full Stop management. Styles then went on to create his own record label called Erskine Records and then in May signed to Colombia Records as a solo artist. He also starred in the Christopher Nolan movie ‘Dunkirk’ playing as his character Alex, a soldier on the Dunkirk beaches; this being one of the first acting jobs Styles has ever done.

Also, in 2016 Styles cut his hair and donated it to ‘Little Princess Trust’ which makes and supplies wigs which are made from real hair.

Styles released his first single in March 2017 as a solo artist called ‘Sign Of The Times’’ The song peaked in UK charts at number one, and on the Billboard Hot 100, number four. His music video for the song was nominated for The Year’s British Music Video, he was awarded the prize. His self-titled album was released in May 2017, where he debuted in eighty-four countries to number one. Styles went on to release the short film ‘Harry Styles: Behind the Album’ which showed his fans the writing and recording process of the album, this was released in May and was an exclusive for Apple Music.

Styles went on his first concert tour headlining ‘ Harry Styles Live on Tour’ after the album. It was rumored on this tour that Styles raised just over £ 1.2 million and donated it all to 59 charities. In 2018, Styles ended his world tour and started to be an executive producer at the’ Happy Together’ CBS series inspired by his relationship and the time he lived with director Ben Winston. Also, in 2018 Harry began modelling for Gucci and since then appeared in several of their campaigns, one of them being for Gucci’s fragrance Mémoire d’une Odeur.

October 2019 saw the release of the new ‘Lights Up’ that made its third debut on UK charts. Styles also appeared on SNL in November where he made several skits and performed Watermelon Sugar’s ‘ Lights Up ‘ and a new song. ‘ He also presented The Late Late Show with James Corden in December.

His album ‘ Fine Line’ was released on the thirteenth of December, after his 3 lead singles. The album made its debut in the UK at number 3 and topped the charts in the US. The record was broken by Fine Line as the highest selling debut album from an English male artist in the US. At the 2020 Brit Awards Styles was nominated for Best Male Solo Artist and British Album of The Year, unfortunately Styles did not win these awards but performed ‘Falling’ a ballad from his album while at the Brits.
