It was during my job I observed that a lot small and medium-size industries tend to over optimize their designs without adding design simulation to the workflow. In such a scenario an engineer will design a product with decisions based on applicable hand calculations, historical data, or even instinct thereby compensating for alternative design which will be far more efficient and profitable. With time I could see a pattern, that there exists a gap in terms of knowledge and exposure given to them about simulation. which could have given them a situation of how an existing system might perform if altered in terms of shape, size or material, or how a new system might behave before the prototype is even completed, thus saving on costs and lead time Which brought me back to the final year of my Bachelors where I was designing the prototype of footsteps that generates power, depicting the system generating a voltage using footstep force on SolidWorks Platform. The trial runs were conducted manually which led to several futile attempts until I got introduced through one of the faculty the concept and application of Computer Simulations. Through which I conducted load validations, design change, and optimization. Eventually the prototype could withstand the standing load. That experience gave me an insight into the background of computational engineering software packages and sufficient grasp of the fundamentals of solving complicated real-life problems using the concept of design validations virtually in FEA application
The concept of verifying and validating theoretical ideas while keeping the costs of such processes feasible intrigued me. I was so fascinated by the power of “FEA” and its myriads of practical applications that I started watching videos, reading journals, I didn’t expect how much I would enjoy working on FEA and CAD, Over the course of time I developed the competency in the field of FEA and therefore decided to conduct Motion Simulation, Design optimization, and Load validations with SolidWorks FEA application in my Major Project “4 Wheel steering and 90 Degree Car Parking System which aimed to address the problem encountered in large size of warehouses which has resulted in constrained movement of goods due to limited space. In the project, a unique solution was being proposed by construction of a prototype of a battery-operated car whose wheels can rotate by ninety degrees about their own axis.
My fascination for design began during school days which led me to choose Engineering Drawing as one of elective subject and further led me to choose the mechanical engineering stream at the undergraduate which not only gave me a certain skill set but also made me to further explore my field of interest and hone my academic strengths. During my undergrad studies I learned more about Finite Element Analysis, Computer Aided Design, Material Science and Machine Design, I always enjoyed long hours in the Labs to correlate theory to practical observation. Also, working on projects throughout the academic gave me a sound technical base and helped me to secure a job at an Engineering Consultancy firm where I was endowed with the responsibility to help Manufacturing and Engineering organizations to streamline their design process by providing Modelling and Analysis solutions.. The field of design and analysis intrigued me so much that post working hours I used to study more about FEA applications like Material Models, Types of Solver etc. and worked as a Design Intern at Plazmatio where we used to create Conceptual/Futuristic Designs of accessories, Products that can make life better. In my present job at Ramboll I am a part of Global CAD/CAE support Team assisting engineering teams of Bridges, Structures, building etc. in their Projects.
From the understanding gained by the plethora of projects during my work experience in the field of design and simulation and learning applications like AutoCAD, SolidWorks, SolidWorks Simulation and Ansys Workbench and APDL. I personally think there is a gap between theory and implementation and strongly believe that understanding of engineering is far more important than knowing each feature in the software and therefore feel the need to pursue post graduate studies to develop the ability to perform simulations and explore system behavior in an articulated way which is often either not possible, or too risky in the real world. Germany is a symbol of technical excellence and a promising destination for higher education. The very fact that many Universities in Germany charge little or no tuition fee by international comparison apprised me of the importance Germany holds in higher education. Stuttgart University ranks high internationally in Computational Mechanics and looking at the course structure of COMMAS having subjects like Discretization Method, Optimization of Mechanical Systems, Smart Structures which perfectly aligns to my background. And caters my field of interest, I sincerely believe MS in COMMAS will equip me with unique learning experience, global exposure and a solid foundation and strong technical knowledge In Computational Mechanics. After my post-graduation I plan to work as a technical consultant in the industry and help organizations to streamline their design process and enhance product quality by providing technical expertise, solutions. In the long run I would want to educate many small and medium-size industries back in my country with Simulation and its benefits where still many decision makers believe “We always get the best design on the first attempt, Simulation takes too long, our parts never break, or It requires a specialist” I strongly believe imparting the necessary knowledge would assist them to design Better products with lower costs, and faster time-to-market.
I am aware of the high standards and demands of the post graduate program at University of Stuttgart and am confident of meeting those challenges with my knowledge, skills, discipline and zeal. I hope that my application for admission for Winter 2018, will be considered favorably. It would indeed be an honor to join the post graduate program in COMMAS and take a deep dive into the field of FEA.
