In today's society we are surrounded by technology. Many have the choice to either keep up or get left behind because it is constantly changing. Just about anywhere traveled there will be a computer in some way, shape or form. From the cash register at the grocery store to the iPod nano used to listen to music. Technology can be used in so many helpful ways to assist with the day to day life. A major advancement for technology has been found in the medical field. The Da Vinci Surgical Robot is used by surgeons to get a better it into areas of the body where the human hand has difficulty reaching. While there are various advantages there are also a lot of disadvantages that can cause danger to a person. Technology can be harmful to children or even adults if they become dependent on the daily use, communication between families and health disorders. In Ray Bradbury's short story The Veldt, Bradbury displays how a family living in a home that does everything for them disconnects the family from one another.
Children really have the world at their finger tips. Many children grow up in the techno world starting all the way from preschool. At very young ages they exposed to so many different platforms such as iPad, cells phones, video gaming systems well as desk top computers. Adolescence have the ability to learn anything from their ABC's to how many mile the Great Wall of China is. Many parents use these devices to keep a child attention occupied while they complete a task. This is a lot easier than trying to multitask and deal with a child all at the same time. Keeping track of how long a child is exposed to a certain device is key to making sure they do not become technology dependent. For example, if one is always playing the PlayStation for hours on end with no break between that may pose a problem. Because they have become so dependent on play it may seem to them like a piece of life is being taken away. Another reason why screen times should be monitored for children is because of the type of things that could be accessed. If a parental filter is not in place a child has the ability to search inappropriate material. Which just the click of the mouse it could open the door to a child being exposed to violent content or even cyberbullying. It is proven that the most critical development stages for a human is when they are young. The ability for a child's brain to retain information is better than for someone that is older in age.
Communication is a key factor to making it through day to day life. Webster's definition of communication is the act or process of using words, sounds, signs or behaviors to express or exchange information or to express your ideas, thoughts, feelings, etc., to someone else. Being able to communicate effectively and properly goes along way. Not only is it the key to success in personal relationships with friends and family but in the work environment as well. There are many different ways people can communicate to each other. Rather it be through sign language, text message, phone call or even email all of these are methods of communicating. Technology could have the possibility to disrupt that process if not handled carefully.
In short story The Veldt, Ray Bradybury depicts how the automated house called 'Happylife Home' has turned the Hadley family communication skills upside down. Mother and father Lydia and George not only has problem communicating effectively with each other but which their children as well. When the parents try to take control of the situation and get their family back on track that's when things slowly starts to spiral out of control.
