The Discussion of Advantages of New England Over Chesapeake

Although the Chesapeake region was a small region that had success, ultimately New England had greater success because they had better climate, their government was advanced and were able to fish. The reason the New England colonies were founded was because separatists were fleeing religious persecution by King James of England. It granted political rights to all male colonists who would abide by the colony’s laws. So most Puritans, Pilgrims, Separatists who wanted to break from England were there for religious freedom. After they got there Puritans didn’t allow people to have religious freedom therefore they went on to explore more colonies.

Although farming was not there strongest thing. They had the option to fish and whaling since they lived so close to the ocean. They would catch fish so they could eat it at home. They captured the whales for their oil. Whaling was very successful way to make a living out of it if you were able to work well together and catch. They would also build ships and it was profitable because you would buy one if you were a sailor, fisherman, whaler, traveler or trader. Thomas Hilton and David Thomsom built houses so they could be used as an export for wood and fish for economic gain.

They had a better climate for growing their food. They were on the east side so they had harsh winters but other than that it was better than the Chesapeake since it wasn’t hot and humid most of the time. There weren’t a lot of diseases spreading because of the long winters. Although for the short summers they were able to grow corn, pumpkins, rye, squash and beans. Since their climate was cold and hot there soil was a lot more fertile than the other regions.

They started their own civil government called the Mayflower Compact, which was an agreement establishing a civil government under the sovereignty of King James I and creating the Plymouth Plantation colony. They founded about half a dozen towns they set up churches and they ran their own tax affairs, which they taxed the community to finanance operations.The 102 passengers on the Mayflower. Half or them were Separatists.. They were there so they could practice their religion. The rest of the passengers were workers, orphans severants, merchants and one-third of them were children.

As a conclusion, the New England colonies had better success than the Chesapeake colonies because they had better climate to grow food, moreover, they also were able to fish to make profit and trade with other colonies.
