Civil Injustices in The Modern America

Dr. Martin Luther King is a man that worked hard in hopes that one day blacks in America could have the same rights and the same opportunities like that of the whites in America. He dreamed the all colors of skin in America could learn to live with each other peacefully and love one another. In many ways his dream has been accomplished but sadly blacks in America have a far way to go until they are truly free “But one hundred years later , the Negro is still not free; one hundred years later the life of a Negro is still sadly crippled by the manacles of segregation and the chains of discrimination.”

Today in America anyone of any skin color can live where they want and got to school where they want. In the 1950s blacks were only allowed to go to school with other blacks and the learning environment was nowhere near as advanced as that of a school in a white neighborhood and because of this many blacks had a poor education. It was rare that many blacks went on to college and it was eve more rare for them to get accepted for the fact that their skin color was brown. Although today some blacks don’t go off to college because of their economic status, those who do are actually given the chance to succeed and are givin the assistance they need in order to do that.

In the 1940s especially in the South it was almost unheard of a black American actually casting a vote that counted towards an elected official. The 15th amendment gave everyone the right the vote and they couldn't be denied the right to vote because of the color of their skin. Even though this was set in place many blacks were not allowed to vote because before they could actually vote they had to pass a literacy test or they had to pay poll taxes. Some blacks did not even go if the fear they might get hurt or something bad would come upon them or upon their family. Now today blacks are allowed to vote freely and are even encouraged to register vote and vote in the next presidential or senate race. The right to vote given to all Americans no matter the color of their skin made it possible have the first ever black president in office for two terms.

Although America has come a far way, this country has a very long way to go. Martin Luther King’s dream was never fully achieved, to say that it was achieved is to ignore the mass incarceration rate of blacks, the police brutality against any person of color, rights being denied to the lgbtq community, and the unfair law procedures. It is hard to say that his dream has been fully accomplished when even the president himself has made comments that insult many races and many sexualities.

Blacks in America have one of the highest mass incarceration rates compared to that of whites. The reasons they are locked away such as petty theft or distribution of drugs would never lock away a white man away for the same amount of time. Police brutality has become more apparent in the recent years for the fact that a police officer can beat a Black or Latino person and not face any consequences. When any step out and protest and say that there are injustices in America they are disregarded and told that they are wrong. They are told police relations with the community are the best they have ever been.

The president tried to put a ban on transgender soldiers in the army so that they could no longer serve. The LGBTQ community has been denied the right to marriage by many facilities and businesses for the fact that they believed gay marriage to wrong. Some transgenders in the community have been denied the right to take their journey to the next step by actually getting a gender reversal surgery by some doctors.

America has accomplished so much when it comes to the rights of minorities and the LGBTQ community. It is forever documented that Barack Obama was the first ever African American President. It will forever be known that same sex marriage was legalized in all 50 states on June 26, 2015. America is a country that is always striving coward to be better so that the people of this country can have a better life. Unfortunately it will always be known that there was a high occurrence of police brutality in America that lead to death of many Blacks. If Martin Luther King was alive today he would be proud of how far America has come but he would be disappointed in the civil injustices that many have faced today.
