In English language there are eight parts of speech and they are:

Noun, pronoun, verb, adjective, adverb, preposition, conjunction, and interjection. The parts of speech show the function of a word in context of its meaning and grammar in the sentence. Any word can perform the function of one or more parts of speech whenever used in different contexts.

  1. NOUN
  2. A noun is word that denotes the name of a person, place, thing, or idea. Proper nouns start with a capital letter; common nouns start with small letters. Nouns can either be singular or can be plural. Melissa, Delhi, water melon and honesty are all examples of nouns.

  3. PRONOUN
  4. A pronoun is a word used instead of a noun, most often for a specific noun. Pronouns are divided into the following types: personal pronouns which refer to particular persons or things; possessive pronouns show ownership; reflexive pronouns lay emphasis on another noun or pronoun; relative pronouns bring in a subordinate clause; and demonstrative pronouns point out to nouns. When a noun is replaced by a pronoun it is called an antecedent. For e.g. Tom is a good teacher. He is very kind to his students. Tom is the antecedent, he and his are personal and possessive pronouns respectively.

  5. VERB
  6. The verb is an action word in a sentence. There are two kinds of verbs: main verb and auxiliary or helping verb like am, is, are, etc. A verb always agrees with its subject in number (singular/plural). Verbs change different forms to express tenses. E.g. running, dancing, playing are all verbs but if we have to express an action of the past then it will become ran, danced, played, etc.

  7. ADJECTIVE
  8. An adjective is a word that describes a noun or a pronoun. It usually answers the question of what kind, which one, or how many. For e.g. adjectives are words like beautiful, sweet, lazy, etc.

  9. ADVERB
  10. An adverb is a word that describes a verb, an adjective, or another adverb. Adverbs answer the questions where, when, why, how, what are the conditions and to what degree. Adverbs often end in -ly. For e.g. quietly, swiftly, fast, etc.

  11. PREPOSITION
  12. A preposition is a word placed before a noun or pronoun to form a phrase or to modify another word in the sentence. Prepositions usually indicate the position of the noun. For e.g. in, on, with, above, below, beside, etc.

  13. CONJUNCTION
  14. A conjunction joins two words, phrases, or clauses. Coordinating conjunctions join two equals: and, but, or, nor, for, so, yet. Subordinating conjunctions join unequal clauses: because, although, while, since, etc.

  16. An interjection is a word used to express emotion. It is often followed by an exclamation point. For e.g. Alas! Bravo! Hurrah! Etc.
