The electoral college system that decides who gets to be president does not properly represent the views of the people. Therefore, the electoral college system should be replaced with a popular voting one, where the presidential candidate who gets the most votes in the election will win the presidency, instead of having the candidate that gets 270 electoral votes win. This way, the votes of citizens more accurately reflect their views, instead of other people voting for them.
The first reason why the electoral college is unfair and should be gotten rid of is that it is possible for a candidate to lose the popular vote and still lose the election. The most recent instance of this happening is in the 2000 election, where George Bush lost the popular election, but beat Al Gore in the electoral college election, 271-266. The electoral college prevents citizens from having a true say in election results. The popular vote represents the will of the people, and many Americans may not know how the electoral system works, or that it even exists. Having others vote on the behalf of voting citizens takes away their power to choose.
Another reason the electoral college is unnecessarily is that the system allows contenders to only have to campaign in a few important swing states in order to gain voters. Candidates spend most of their time on the campaign trail rallying in only a few swing states, and the other, smaller states get little to no attention. Those living in small states such as Rhode Island who do not get visited as much as they want will start to feel like their needs are not being paid attention to. With a national popular vote, every voter has an equal amount of power, whether they be from New York or Montana. This will force runners to campaign everywhere in the US, not just a couple of big states.
