Epistemology is the study nature of human knowledge itself. It focuses on means of human knowledge acquisition and how to differentiate the truth knowledge claims from the false one. The modern epistemology deals with the debate between rationalism and empiricism. In rationalism way of thinking, knowledge is acquired using reasons or reasoning. In empiricism, knowledge is gained through personal experiences. Epistemology must be viewed as a vital philosophical tool, subsequently it is the backbone of how we think. Lacking a means of understanding on how obtain knowledge, it would not be easy to rely on our senses and challenging to come up with concepts in our minds (Rayner, 2011). We don't have coherent thoughts, and therefore sound epistemology is vital to enhance sound reasoning and critical thinking.

We enjoy reading e-books or audiobooks compared to physical books available in a library for the convenience factor. The reasoning behind this is we can access the e-books or audiobooks anywhere and at any time via the Internet. Technology has aided in simplistic forms for creating notes and copy-pasting important information compared to that in physical books which requires individuals to use the old lengthy method of handwriting critical points for future reference. Whether it be the colorful world of social media, the prompt searches via search engines or the ever-increasing pool of available resources on the Internet, the outcome has diverted the population’s minds towards electronic media (Blackmon, 2003). Since and individual can obtain information saved on Smartphones and Laptops the old method of memorizations has been less needed. The dependable use of online libraries has aided many in searching for critical sources when writing scholarly articles or journals. Some people enjoy the old methods of research and writing, but when it comes to expanding knowledge efficiently technology leads the way and is a tool that should be embraced by many.

In the study of epistemology, philosophers are concerned with the epistemological shift. It is the idea that one has shifted, or changed, the way he or she takes in knowledge. The fact that acquiring knowledge has been altered and can be seen in educational organizations every day, the day of chalk board lecturing has been replaced with discussion boards and instructional PowerPoint presentations. Bubble-sheet testing has been replaced with online exams or applications such as Quizlet, student handbooks have been replaced with PDF versions allowing access on school issued device. In a way this is great because old excuses as I forgot my book are no longer valid. On a personal level I see this shift leading in a positive manner on our younger minds, I work in a K-12 educational system as an Information Technology Specialist and have the great benefit of deploying these tools into these young minds hands

The pros of the epistemology shift have led to a continuation of changes and in future it is estimated that even greater developments will occur with the epistemic shift. Ease of access to informational materials online, libraries and other platforms, cloud-based data storage which allows almost instant access to your files and notes are a few of the pros regarding the shift to technology. Electronic media is much cheaper to get hold of and due to Damage concerns also gives the eBooks an advantage, their state cannot be damaged. They can be carried anywhere or accessed from anywhere without being a physical burden on the carrier. eBooks can be shared easily with people over internet and without meeting them physically.

With ever pro it could be argued there is a hand in hand con regarding technology. The information provided on the internet is often termed as non-reliable. The fact that anyone can put up any kind of information makes the information decline the validity of the information. Due to the nature of technology students in a technology-based world tend to lack communication skills as well as have a statistically lower reading comprehension score than previous generations. Another concern of philosophers is since technology aids us to a point where task are almost simplistic students are lacking critical and analytical problem-solving abilities.

Transformation is unavoidable in any academic study, with research, invention and innovation, the development of new concepts, ideas, and theories are created for problem-solving. It can be argued that the philosopher’s fears regarding the shift can be deemed sincere. However; the pros that derive from the shift overshadowed the cons that come with the current epistemology shift. Changes to the way research is conducted has made learning more entertaining and convenient for technology-based generations. Students are engaged, their minds are developing a different way than previously. Considering philosopher’s concerns with the shift of the way knowledge is obtained, instead of focusing on the negative aspects philosopher’s should try and embrace the shift and find a way to use it to their advantage. Technology has many benefits and future generations currently see these aspects in life.
