The Roots of American Football

The first big college game happened in 1869 between Rutgers and Princeton. It wasn't exactly what we think of as football today but more like a mix of rugby and soccer. They tried to get the ball across the goal line, similar to scoring a touchdown now. With growing interest, colleges started forming teams and creating rules.

The Birth of Professional Football

As college football was getting popular, pro teams started showing up in the late 1800s and early 1900s. The Allegheny Athletic Association paid William Heffelfinger $500 to play against Pittsburgh Athletic Club in 1892, making him the first pro football player. But it wasn't until 1920 that the NFL came about. Those early days were tough with money problems and competition from other leagues. Guys like George Halas, who started the Chicago Bears, and Jim Thorpe helped make pro football legit.

Changes That Shaped the Game

Throughout the 20th century, football changed a lot. One major change was adding the forward pass. Before that, most plays were all about running with little passing involved. In 1906, President Theodore Roosevelt wanted changes because too many players were getting hurt badly. So they made passing legal, which really changed how the game was played.
