Since ‘The Terminator’ (1984) with its infamous line “Artificial intelligence (AI for short) is mankind’s last invention”, not only has artificial intelligence become more widely known to the public audience, but is also expected to be the next big thing in the high-tech industry by experts. As expected, in just one decade, artificial intelligence has become far more advanced than we can even imagine. While technological advancement at a whole contributed to the rise of artificial intelligence in the twenty-first century, its diverse applications played the key role in driving its increase. From a simple classical concept of a machine that can imitate living and intelligence processes to superior supercomputers with incredible operating systems all the way down to humanoid robots, recent advancements in artificial intelligence technologies have taken a huge step forward and, judging by the rate of these developments, one thing is certain: We have only seen the beginning.
Artificial intelligence has been used for years for different purposes in almost every field. Although the term artificial intelligence was first coined by John McCarthy at his first academic conference on the subject in 1956, the journey to understand if machines can learn how to do tasks that require forms of human intelligence can be traced back to the mid-fifteenth century when documentation of machine intelligence application in military first appear in Europe. Over a decade ago, in the gaming arena, a supercomputer developed by the American technology company IBM defeated the then world chess champion, Gary Kasparov. Furthermore, face recognition, self-driving cars, industrial robots, tumor detection as well as sports news articles, cook recipes, movie screenplays, and music writing can be named as some of our remarkable achievements with applications of artificial intelligence in the early twenty-first century. Nowadays, numerous significant breakthrough in artificial intelligence technology has led to it being used for more specific and sophisticated tasks.
In medicine, for example, artificial intelligence has become far more advanced than before and are now playing a crucial role as a game-changer in the field. With help from robots enabled with artificial intelligence, doctors can now perform many types of complex as well as microsurgical procedures with more precision, flexibility, and control than is possible with conventional techniques. Moreover, using data gathering through patient interviews and tests, computer programs are now capable of processing and analyzing those large volumes of information, using the results to come up with an accurate diagnosis and, determining an appropriate treatment method.
From gaming arena to medical breakthroughs, there is no doubt that artificial intelligence nowadays has a huge impact on most walks of private and public life. Defense and security are therefore no exception. In the military, artificial intelligence applications in combat systems in many developed countries have contributed significant improvements to its self-actuation, self-control, and self-regulation due to the capabilities of handling a massive amount of data more efficiently and decision-making abilities.
It is now safe to say that those achievements are certainly just the beginning. By the year 2025, machines that are better than us at translating languages will have been fully developed. By the same year, medical robots can perform surgical operations independently. By the year 2030, thanks to advanced medical technology, humans can be saved from deadly injuries by replacing damaged organs or limbs with highly functional prosthesis. These are just a few examples of the AI miracles that are expected in the next few decades.
In just a few years, artificial intelligence has gone from just a phenomenon restricted to science-fiction movies to reality as most people nowadays one way or another encounter some form of artificial intelligence in everyday lives. Artificial intelligence has exceeded all expectations with its unstoppable rise in the modern world, but as always, every coin has two sides. Unemployment, dangerous misuse, and decline in human creativity and innovative thoughts are amongst the disadvantages of artificial intelligence that are set to debate. While it can be controversial that too much emphasis is being placed on artificial intelligence, the human element is and will always be an integral part of the development of all technologies that involved artificial intelligence. We may just have seen the beginning but the future of artificial intelligence technology is still ours to decide.
