Graphic Design is all around us. Everywhere you go, you see the work of graphic designers. When you go to the airport and see the colorful signs, or if you go to the mall and look at the posters with deals on them and the pictures to attract customers. “Graphic Designing is the business of making or choosing marks and arranging them on a surface to convey an idea” (Newark 12). This quote is similar to the actual definition because graphic designing is mostly visual communication. Graphic Design can be specified in many ways, but has three main points, such as contrasting fine arts, describes the role of a theory, and comparing advertising to graphic design.
Most people think that Graphic Design is related to fine arts but that is false. The reason for this confusion is because we use the same tools as a painter, sculptor and photographer to convey our ideas onto a canvas but have completely different purposes. So what’s the differences between fine arts and graphic designing? Fine Arts is for artists that create pieces to their own satisfaction, and can be an emotional outlet for artists to express what they feel inside. Graphic Designing is solely involving the public. Graphic design is mostly visual communication. Visual communication is purposely to be seem, which the brain picks up the signal by eye contact.
A way of looking at a designer is to look at them as a process of building a puzzle. Ernest Gombrick, in his seminal book ‘The Story of Art’ wrote “There really is no such thing as Art, there are only artists” (Hembree 14). We can compare this to a graphic designer by saying it’s not graphic designing. In every graphic designer’s work, there are patterns, codes, shapes, and genres. These patterns can create a fabric of visual languages that never stops updating and evolving. The graphic designer then is someone who is always making sense of her material, and mediating it through the forms and the codes of visual language.
Theory comes from books, but every designer forms a specific theoretical basis. A theory is a set of ideas, mainly consisting in history, where scientist and historians had to depend on their own educated guesses and observations in order to form an idea or hypothesis. According to Drucker, “I don’t think that design needs theory, but I think designers need theory” (Newark 60). Designers need to form theories by glancing.in order to be inspired. The reason for this is because design is non-intellectual meaning, designers are not influenced to do much reading with theoretical texts.
The job of a designer takes patience and can be fairly challenging when enduring all of the steps. Designer are given specific type of problems that must give a clear idea of what is being displayed, come to terms with the budget, and think if there would be any other type of obstacles that would be faced. Then the ideas are put on my paper to be printed or ideas being put online to be seen by the public. “To design is to create order and to function according to plan” (Hembree 15) Without order in a design project, you will find little success in progressing.
People would say these characteristics share the same as advertising; Both employ images to catch the audiences’ attention, they use websites and prints, and they both use logos.
The only difference is advertising is promoting a certain product or brand and designing is an organization of many products and brands themselves. It can be said that yes, both advertising and designing are both in the same family, but advertising would be under designing.
In conclusion, graphic designing is a combination of art and text and creating designs for the public, but not related to advertising. Advertising is a completely different field but can be compared to graphic designing but advertising is made to persuade people to buy certain products, while graphic designing is completely for self-pleasure and creativity. Graphic designer also works with forming ideas by creating theories. There used to be a lot of confusion with theories but a quote by Drucker that says “I don’t think that design needs theory, but I think designers need theory” (Newark 60) has cleared that it’s the designer that theories and not the design. The last point that was made was graphic design may involve creating images but it is not a walk in the park. It requires patience and focus.
