The army for the Patriots in the Revolutionary War was called the Continental Army. George Washington was selected as a leader in 1775, a few days before the beginning of the Battle of Bunker Hill on June 17th. They were the force that pushed out three of the nine most important victories in the war. They actually had surrendered often though, considering their reputation as a very good army, which they kind of were, but kind of were not. The Continental Army was a very small force it seemed, that had barely any training and still brought the Americans a victory. The majority of it was assembled by the Second Continental Congress because it was a defensive based program. Some have said the war was “unfair” because the british had over eight million residents in the USA in 1775, where the Patriots had less than two and a half million.

One fifth of the Patriot population was made up of slaves. Those numbers are very unequal, but that is enough considering that the most populated colony, which was mostly for Patriots, was Virginia at the time with 440,016 people, which is quite a lot. Most of the war was fought in three states, which were New York, New Jersey, and South Carolina. Alone there was over 200 battles and fights in these states. The way they fought at first in the war was volleying around lead shot at each other and most likely the team with the most men and guns wins. The populations of the two armies were with Britain at approximately 47,000 soldiers and Loyalists at disposal in 1775 alone, where the Continental Army had about 231,000 men over the course of the whole war. They had known the land a lot better than the British, and it is said that the Patriots won and had an easier time with guerilla warfare because the British wore red coats. That is how they got their name as Redcoats. The patriots had fought hard over a course of six and a half years.

The war was started technically on April 19th of 1775, and was ended after the Battle of Yorktown, which was in October of 1781. There was many fights and battles, but the major ones only number up to fifteen. Four of those major battles were fought in the eventful year of 1777, which was the most major battles fought in a year over the course of this war. Of the most important battles, the Battle of Yorktown was said to be one of the most important ever. If the battles they had won and had been defeated earlier had not happened, this would not be a battle because the plans to destroy each other after a defeat or victory drove the two sides of the war to go there. Washington had defeated General Cornwallis but trapping the British in the area and closing off all connections to the world and the advantage of supplies. The British army was forced to surrender under Washington, and this act had technically ended the war and brought in the victory for the Patriots.

The Treaty of Paris had been signed two years later in 1783 and closed the deal. That was the end of the war but there were still a lot of tensions between Loyalists and Patriots. When the war was starting, there was no draft. The men and a lot of the time young boys who were typically around fifteen years of age would be forced to join the militia, and the leader of the militia had to make them go to the city hall or the most government-affiliated structures in the towns and villages to have them sign their name in a book or log and had them get a list of things like bread, water, shot, and other vitals or weapons for the war from their homes, though sometimes these things were provide. That was very rare though. At this time in the world, no women, disabled or negroes were allowed to fight or sign up in the war. It was not until later when the teams started using slaves.

Women were never allowed to fight or serve in any war until World War II when they were needed for other jobs the men could not do because they were off fighting for the country. That then evolved to them serving on the field, and that was the start to equality between the the sexes, somewhat. There would be no requirements besides sex and race, but the standard rules were that one should be at least eighteen years of age, but that was never really followed because a small but sure percentage was fifteen to eighteen year olds. The British had trained men with better quality equipment, and had a very good advantage. Also, in almost all battles, the British had the quality and especially the quantity of everything. When the times got tough for them while fighting the courageous and small but big-hearted Continental Army, they had hired a decently large amount of help. They had to get mercenaries in the picture, so they turned and hired a German group of trained men who were from the state of Hesse-Cassel. The people in the war had called them Hessians. They had helped, but were defeated by Washington. On Christmas Day of 1776, when the Patriots crossed the cold Delaware river and went to Trenton, New Jersey.

The next ten days were a battle for the books as the Continental Army had won. Many times, the the Continental army had fled the scene because the casualties were very high, which was not a good thing. Most of the time, the casualties were a high number for both sides. That never stopped them in the long run, considering that the war was a six and a half year battle itself with hundreds and hundreds of battles and fights within. The Continental Army was, in conclusion, a tree with hundreds of branches, some bigger, some smaller. Each was either not affiliated at all with the rest besides the same means to fight, or was connected with little to none, because of the lack of technology for communication and the area of war. The whole area was eastern America, which was soon to be the United States of America. The Continental Army had brought us a victory in which we all are affected by. They let us be free.
