Having a job that pays well enough to support their basic needs is what most of my peers wish for in the country where I am from. I am from Jamaica, most people who just heard of my country always has the best things to say whenever I told them that is where I am from. Of course I can say without a doubt, that is the best place to visit for a vacation, but growing up there, was not always a paradise for us because of the lack of jobs, and the few jobs that are available pay so little that they barely covers the bills, much less to buy food, and for the parents that have kids to send to school, it is normally hard to supply all that need with such low income.
About 70% of the people there starting from my age up to age thirty and some over either still live in their parent’s house or in some family member’s house, mostly because they are unemployed, and because the income that some people receive is too low to rent a place of their own and to do other stuff they need to do. Therefore, if you ask me, I am very happy to be in a position where I can work and make enough where I can support myself. I am not saying there aren’t any jobs in Jamaica, but basically if you want a good job that pays you well, you have to have good education. I consider myself as having a lot of opportunity because I have a wide variety of jobs I can chose to apply to with a 99% chance of getting the job and pays well. In Jamaica the minimum wage is $7000 – $9700 per week, sounds like a lot of money right? Well the currency exchange rate from 1USD to JMD is $137 and if you convert that $7000 into USD it is only $50. 9 and for $9700 it’s $70. 5 USD. Imagine working for $50 – $70 a week. It would not make sense comparing the cost of living in the United States and living in Jamaica, however, people just make it work for them because there is no other choice.
I moved from Jamaica five years ago at age 16, and I have never worked there before I came here, but my brother who is two years older than I, had a job, so I have an idea of how much he used to earn weekly, and I can say comparing to what he makes here now, is more than a huge difference. Life in Jamaica was a bit hard before we came here, but never the less, I really miss living there even though it was a struggle. Being here makes me appreciate life more, knowing that I am able to work and help out my family back home.
It really amazed me to see some people here complain about not wanting to do certain jobs, because of the simplest reasons, when I know of people that would die to be in their position. I am so thankful to be where I am and for the job I am currently doing, it may not be the best at times, but I enjoy what I do, and it covers my bills, and I make enough where I can help my family and friends in Jamaica. To the condition of how hard it is to get a job in Jamaica, people would do just about anything to earn money. I want to say about 45% if not 50% of the population there is unemployed, this means in most areas there are going to be violence, not being eligible for a job, not having an education, not having places to even work, persons are going to have limited choices and that result in violence because so much anger, frustration, stress, depression and all other things starts to build up and things like that blinds people’s hope, so then they are bound to try and find other solution, which results in robbing, killing, and the list goes on. Why can’t people appreciate the work that they do if it is a job that pay well or cover their expense and basic needs. If some people in America hate the job that they do, why do that specific job knowing that they are going to complain about it at the end of the day. Maybe some people may not be qualified for the job they desire or for the job with higher pay, but why complain knowingly that they aren’t qualified instead of try to reach the requirement of the job they want to do. Why do some people think everything in life should come easy? I personally believe one of the main reasons some people complain so much is because they don’t learn to appreciate what they have and everything mostly comes easy because they always have their parents or friends they can always call on, or maybe they just have too much to choose from.
Growing up in poverty, I know for a fact that a lot of people would like to be where I am, a lot of people would like to earn at least $6 an hour, a lot of people would like to say “yes I have a job” or “my occupation is…” with a smile on their face. As simple as my job is, I make more than what teachers earn monthly there in just two weeks and that is really sad. And to top it off, for the living condition, the cost of living there is pricy for some reason I do not know why, so the poverty goes on and on. My only wish is to see things get better there, and I already have the mindset to start some type of organization to support as much people as I can support there.
I work at Shari’s restaurant as a cook. That’s not where I am planning on working for the rest of my life, but for the time, I am happy to be working there because it is a very nice place to work and the employees there are mostly awesome, the vibes there is good to work with. That was my first job, and I have been working there since 2015. Yes I have my times when I do not want to work at all, for instance, during the winter time when the snow starts to fall, I do not like to drive in the snow, and I do not like to go outside when it is that cold. Coming from a tropical island, it is going to take me a good while before I get use to the Idaho weather. I have worked at other places while working there, but never interested in leaving because I knew that job well and got so used to just doing that. I decided not to seek any other job for right now because I am trying to finish school first and doing something that I am good at and used to, works well for me. I am currently majoring in drafting, so I am looking forward to working as a draft man soon. Although I am majoring in drafting, after doing it for a while it makes me want to change field, but I am more than half way done, so it would not make any sense to start something new all over again. My dream job has always been architecture, ever since I was younger, I always liked the idea of drawing my dream house, or the just sketch a random building. In the long run I am definitely going to pursue my dream in becoming an architect, but it is a long journey a head, so it is ok to start little by little, because it takes a lot of hard work and determination. Drafting is like getting the experience before becoming an architect.
Having a job, makes me realize that there is more to life than just working just to pay bills. The older I get I start to think more about what my next step is. I want to be able to travel to places I have never traveled before, I also want to be able to travel back and forth to Jamaica and here as often as I can, so to do that I have to work a lot and save a lot. Sometimes having two jobs works out well too, only if that is the only thing I have time for because it does not turn out well if it overlaping with school and two jobs. In my current situation, I work five days a week and goes to school two days a week, like right now it is very hard sometimes to get anything done. When I am not at work I am at school, and when I am not at school I am at work, which made me realize in the end that I sacrifice a lot of my time, but that is what we have to do when we want something good in life.
To conclude, it is very important to have a job in todays society, work is a very valuable aspect and is needed to survive in today’s world, we should take advantage of the many opportunities that we are given when it comes to been eligible for a job, because many out of our position would like to be in our shoes. I will never forget where I came from, I am so motivated and so I am going to forever make use of the opportunity.
