Integrity can be defined as soundness of character which involves inculcating moral and ethical principles as well as upholding honesty (Cox, 2015). Apart from job competencies and expertise, every manager ought to possess integrity. Integrity is synonymous with honesty and trust. Managers are accountable to the organization as well as the stakeholders. Honesty demands the doing of things in the right way, and as a virtue, it should be embraced by the organization. Upholding integrity entails following the due legal and acceptable processes set out by the memorandum and articles of association which are the constitution of the company (Mone & London, 2014). A good epitome of instances that a manager can showcase integrity is when interacting with peers, colleagues, subordinates, the general public as well as when executing managerial duties.

A manager interacts with internal and external stakeholders of the organization, and the success of the organization lies in the manner in which the stakeholders relate and perceive the organization. In this case, the manager plays a critical role in interacting and interlinking the organization to these stakeholders. Integrity is therefore vital value for success (Cascio, 2018). A manager with integrity is required to deal with statutory government agencies regularly, and besides creating ethical issues, failure to incorporate managerial integrity may lead to non-conformity with regulatory requirements leading to a series of legal problems which may cost the company a great deal of time and money (Roberts, 2014).

As the manager seeks to create a conducive and accommodative working atmosphere in an organization, a manager with integrity will help motivate and mobilize the team of subordinates. Ideally, for the team member to act with full diligence and sincerity, the manager should be the lead in practicing integrity. Truth, justice, and transparency are virtues which given forth by a manager who practices integrity. According to Mone and London (2014), the benchmark for every manager should be integrity. It goes without saying that a manager who embraces honesty is not only useful to the individual department but the organization as a whole. With integrity, agendas are tackled in a straightforward, bold and honest manner. Integrity helps a manager be accountable for his or her actions even when the company suffers loss or undergoes breakdowns. Also, a manager with integrity will champion and fight for the rights of the oppressed and minors in the organization and society at large. When unjust actions are leveled against an employee, a manager with integrity will speak out, address and boldly condemn such acts.
