Diverse team refers to different departments with distinct specialities work collaboratively towards a common goal within an organization. Team oriented firms aim to “get people from different functions to work effectively together”. Hence, we see that these firms practice a diverse team infrastructure and team working. “In diverse teams, each individual brings different knowledge to a situation and thus provides new sources of learning and fresh perspectives…they outperform homogenous workplaces” (Liu 2007). Put in another way, diverse teams embody staff members with high levels of diversified skills, interpretation and understanding which are contributed towards the economic and social development toward the success of the company or organisation. It is also said that “the most innovative organisations formed diverse teams because heterogeneity has significant advantages in terms of creativity and innovation” (Liu 2007).

Some firms perform cross functional team-building and team-working; in addition, it operates as a virtual team. The diversity of cross functional team players creates a new culture...This group...is an amalgam of many cultures (Parker, 2003). In other words, the members come from a variety of backgrounds with different skills and experiences. Placed in the work environment, this means that several branches of departments would have members with a diversity of potential to work together. As these employees assemble, as a result, they create a new and more effective strategy to have the job completed within the most professional effective and efficient possible manner. A company’s strategic objective is to achieve constant product improvement and innovation for their customers and new customers therefore, it is imperative that the following departments within the hierarchical structure such as the marketing, finance and research and development department employ team working tools to accomplish the company’s long-term objectives. The associated benefits are that the employees will be able to think out of the box, as a result, such employees would be more unconventional within their thinking processes and the entire body of employees shall become enriched with more experienced and innovative employees.

According to (Pride, 2011), some limitations are the additional training costs and lack of clarity with respect to leadership. These are some of the liabilities in this type of cross functional structure which the firm may have to encounter. Another high cost for the company is the increased training and the specialist labour for the company, the organisation ensures well qualify individuals are employed owing to be able to maintain a superior quality service and product within the industry. According to (Hellriegel, 2007) “a virtual team refers to members who collaborate through various information technologies on one or more task while located at two or more locations.” Put otherwise, in other terms, the virtual team is described as dynamic, where team members are located within remote distance from each other, however in spite of the distance; they collaborate through the usage of technology such as conference systems faxes and e-mails, however, there may be challenges and experiences, for example, the internal emailing system may experience technical difficulties such as the network line crossing, service interruption and electricity outages. Once a company has recruited several cooperating and positioned in different projects and regions of the world, multinational networking is facilitated from various stations. In turn, the corporation may reap the advantages of reduced costs, reduced workforce and more efficient production.
