The Importance of Understanding One's Role

Who Am I?

Prior to this assignment, I haven’t really thought deeply about who I am, and the various roles that I am a part of. I feel that many others feel the same way as me on such issues, however, I feel it is essential to evaluate such topics, because it enhances our understandings of ourselves and what goals we have for our futures. The roles that I am involved in now are dynamic, and will certainly be very different in the future. I feel the title that gives most definition as to who I am right now would certainly be extended to being an international student. I say this, because this role consumes most of my time and thoughts right now. By understanding the importance of such a role, I can better understand myself and my future path.

Being an international student is certainly not an easy task, but I have somewhat adapted to my responsibilities of such. Much better than when I first arrived to the United States, that’s for sure. Not only am I responsible for school work, bettering my English, but also learning the rooms and societal norms that make up this country. Which are a lot different from my own in several ways. Not to mention balancing my religious beliefs. Since I am a Muslim, I am responsible for praying five times a day, attending the Mosque on Fridays, and eating Halal foods. These can be quite tricky in the United States, since most people do not practice this religion here and there are limited resources for help. I have undergone many struggles and triumphs as an international student, however, I feel a lot more comfortable in this role, compared to when I first arrived.

Although this role is very difficult, and I struggle often, I wouldn’t change who I am for anything. I came here with a purpose to obtain a valid education and graduate. This is my major role and the majority of who I am right now. Although, this role certainly will not be set in place in a few years, it will help m with my next stage in life or role.
