Effective communication involves effective speaking and active listening. Verbal exchanges in discussions are not sufficient in relaying messages. Other factors such as tonal variations and non-verbal cues are also crucial. Research has proven that non-verbal cues are the most useful devices in communication, followed by tonal variations and lastly verbal exchanges. Both the speaker and audience need to incorporate all the three elements of effective communication to ensure messages are accurately relayed.

Breaking the monotony is vital in effective communication. Sitting in the same spot, reading notes in the same tone, and maintaining the same face throughout the speech is annoying to the audience. The audience will most likely lose concentration midway through the address, reducing its effectiveness. A compelling speaker should be appropriately dressed and deliver his or her speech in a charismatic manner to captivate the audience. The speaker should vary the tone depending on the message conveyed and the associated emotion. The speaker should also portray confidence through his body language. The speaker should stand, walk around and make gestures on the subject.

Effective communication is a two-way road. The audience also has a pivotal role to play in effective communication. They should have the intention to be fully awake and aware, maintain eye contact with the speaker and make sure they are attentive. The body language of the audience is also essential. The audience should sit upright and give affirming nods. The audience should avoid sinking in the seats and yawning openly as this may dissuade the speaker. Finally, the audience should offer feedback to the speaker though asking questions and asking for clarification in areas that are not clear.

The speaker and audience have active and passive roles to play in communication. They should work together, making use of non-verbal cues to ensure that the discussion is productive.
