A tribe of “1100” men once went out to hunt, leaving the village in the hand of the women and children. When the men returned, the village was burned down by an unknown arsonist. The landscape where the village was, was covered in a blanket of ash. This tribe became known as the Bah Kho-je, people of the grey snow, or the Iowa Tribe (Bah Kho-je 1).
The Iowa Tribe eventually broke up into two groups, the Iowa Tribe of Kansas and Nebraska and the Iowa Tribe of Oklahoma. The Iowa Tribe of Oklahoma was originally from the Red Pipestone Quarry in southwestern Minnesota in the 1600’s, moved to Indian Territory in 1878, and currently are based in the town of Perkins, Oklahoma. The Iowa Tribe descended from the Oneota Tribe. In the early 1600’s, the Iowa Tribe lived in the Red Pipestone Quarry in Southwestern Minnesota (Bah Kho-Je 1), but by 1676 the Ioway were first recorded by Europeans in Green Bay (Jon D. May 1).
By 1730 the Iowa tribes were found in villages in the Lake Okoboji and Spirit Lake region of Iowa. The tribe moved south to Council Bluffs, Iowa. Most of them finally established their territory on the Grand and Platte Rivers in Missouri, while some of the tribe established camp along the Des Moines River. Treaties allowed them to claim land in Iowa, Missouri, and Minnesota (Bah Kho-je 1). The Treaty of 1836 sent the Iowa Tribe to the Great Nemaha River in Kansa and Nebraska. After some time, approximately half the population of the Iowa Tribe was sent to Indian Territory (Bah Kho-je 1). In 1878, some of the Iowa Tribe started moving to Indian Territory (Jon D. May 1). By 1883, an executive order was passed that established the first official Iowa reservation in Indian Territory.
This led to the division of the Iowa Nation into two tribes: the Iowa Tribe of Oklahoma, and the Iowa Tribe of Kansas and Nebraska (Bah Kho-je 1). Today the Iowa Tribe of Oklahoma is stationed in Perkins, Oklahoma. The jurisdiction of the tribe ranges in Payne, Oklahoma, and parts of Lincoln, and Logan counties. There currently 800 members of the tribe and they have three casinos operating in the jurisdiction of the tribe. The Iowa Tribe of Oklahoma also has their own Police and Fire Department working within the jurisdiction of the tribe. The Iowa Tribe of Oklahoma continues to be part of the community and still has ceremonies to celebrate their tribe (Bah Kho-je 1).
The Iowa Tribe of Oklahoma was originally from the Red Pipestone Quarry in Minnesota, came to Indian territory in 1878, and based in the town of Perkins, Oklahoma. The Ioway’s goal is: “To improve the economic and social quality of life, for our tribal members and the adjacent communities.” (Bah Kho-je 1). Currently, they seem to be doing a great job at improving the way of life for the tribe. While only having about 800 members, the Iowa tribe is thriving and running three casinos, a police force, and a fire department. The Iowa Tribe of Oklahoma is the heart of Perkins and the fact that the tribe has done so much for the town proves they are fulfilling their mission.
