The Issue of Desertification in The World

The issue being discussed is desertification. This is a very big problems in some parts of the world, for example Africa, the Middle East, South America and more. This is an issue that mainly comes from climate change, deforestation and droughts. The reason why desertification comes from these issues is because for example, when you cut down trees it makes the soil not have enough nutrients. Another example is when droughts occur, the land becomes really dry and there ae no nutrients in the soil, so it becomes desert like and it makes the land unusable for farming and other stuff. To add on, the UN has done many actions regarding to this topic.

The Model United Nations has created many committees like the UNCCD or the UN-REDD and many, many more. One of the main committees is the UNCCD. The UNCCD, The United Nation Committee Combating Desertification, is a committee that has conventions about desertification, why it is a problem and how we can solve this issue. The UNCCD created the Committee on Science and Technology (CST) (Tsuei, 3,4,5). This committee looks at desertification cases, and scientifically created the best solution to the problems. The reason they do it scientifically is because some solutions may not be very good for the environment. The CTS made a very powerful impact on the policy actions. There are many committees like the ones listed above that help inside the Model United Nations, however not all countries are involved in the committees to help desertification (Tsuei, 3,4,5). One example is Canada. Canada withdrew from the UNCCD, and Canada has a big issue with desertification, but this issue is not in their main problems (Tsuei, 3).

In addition, economy has a very big impact on this issue. This is because desertification makes the land in the rural places useless, making people not have jobs so people go into the urban part of the city. When the people in the rural areas go into the urban areas to live and get jobs because their farmland is not fertile and good to use for their crops, the city may not always have jobs for those people. Also many times there are many issues in the urban areas that in the rural areas didn’t existand they many times cannot deal with all of those economical issues and so those people stay living in the streets without money, making the city or even the countries poverty percentage bigger and creating not a very balanced economy. (Tsuei, 4) Desertification can have a really big impact on the environment or a small impact. The reason why it can have a really big impact is because the land in the farms may not be usable anymore, and the food supply that they produces, would not be able to reproduce because the land doesn’t have any use.

Another way this can impact the environment is because when droughts occur, there is no water making the place where the drought occured have no water for the people living in those areas (Tsuei, A.). According to *missing the citation* desertification can affect the human health because since the farmlands get desertificated, crops cannot grow, and no crops means no food. This all leads up to malnutrition because you don’t eat enough, and your body needs more food, but there is no way you can give it to your body because there is no food because of this issue.
