"Grey’s Anatomy addresses what happens in the real world. Lots of families face abusing and violence on a daily basis whether it’s the husband hitting the mother or harming the kids. Each year around 45,000 Americans die by suicide what about how many people suicide in the whole world? And suicide is increasing yearly.
Grey’s Anatomy shows many stereotypes of how kids and mothers get abused throughout their marriage. Grey’s Anatomy is the stereotype killer because it was labeled to take our schemas about women in minorities and destroy them, for the better about women in minorities and destroy them, for the better of course. Before we talk about how Grey’s Anatomy did a fantastic job, we need to understand what a stereotype and schema are.
Schemas are our cognitive knowledge about objects, people or situations. Schemas help organize our understanding by guiding our behavior, assisting recall of our memories and predicting the behavior of others, and it's all about understanding a group of people.
Majority of how we experience a stereotype is through active activation, an unintentional and spontaneous process that our brain does use implicit associations. We develop stereotypes from our experience over time.
Dr. Bailey is a fantastic surgeon where she reached the top, and African women are commonly stereotyped as angry, animalistic and maids. However, Dr. Bailey breaks the black women stereotype by not only being a doctor and a general surgeon but also by being the top of her class. In season two one of the interns requested the “Nazi” which is the nickname for Dr.Bailey because she is tough and blunt. When he saw Dr. Bailey, he said there is no way she could be the “Nazi” because she is African American, Although Bailey played along with it till he realized she was the “Nazi” and it is a great moment seeing his wrongdoing and not judge by look or race. This also refers to Paul where he is a fantastic doctor with great surgery skills and being the best. It is very confusing, and plot twisted where Paul save lives for work and although hurts people and make them think they are not worth anything and they are just a single person with no quality in life whatsoever.
Overall, Grey’s Anatomy wants the good to people and make people happy. It also teaches us that not to judge people by the way they look or where they are from or the color of their skin or their race.
