This article written by Joshua Tyree explores concepts related to aspects of the movie series Star Wars. The author begins this article with claiming that this trash compactor utilized in this series is not a working or efficient system. However, the author does believe this system does eliminate the trash, we never see this happening throughout the series. Which indicates issues to the author of this article. The author feels that this machine is not properly doing its job, and desires to discuss such issues with audiences. Although, these ideas are somewhat unessential to most people, due to the fact that this series is fictional the author has passion and desires to bring these issues to our attention.
According to Tyree: “ The Death Star clearly has a garbage-disposal problem. Given its size and massive personnel, the amount of waste it generates — discarded food, broken equipment, excrement, and the like — boggles the imagination. That said, I just cannot fathom how an organization as ruthless and efficiently-run as the Empire would have signed off on such a dangerous, unsanitary, and shoddy garbage-disposal system as the one depicted in the movie (Tyree, page 1, N.D.). This quote utilized reveals that these ideas are inconsistent with the methodologies of the films.
After this quote above, the author tries to use 9 assertions of this mysterious compacting system. Each of these questions utilizes scenarios within the series that make these ideas of the death starts inability to be effective or even do the job intended. Amongst these nine ideas is an example of not having a separate compartment for organic and inorganic wastes. Another scene in this film showed that the compact system has two metal gates that close in, which is not typical to actual machines. Generally, one of these walls closes in, which allows the trash to be compacted more efficiently. Each of these nine are utilized to show audiences how his conclusions were formed. Although each are relevant to his case, for those who have never watched these videos, the information is unknown in regard to truth. One would have to watch these videos, while looking for all these instances, which would be rather time consuming. I feel the author should have indicated the scene and the sequels number to help audiences reveal the accuracy of this.
There are several conclusions I have drawn from this article; the relevance is not one of them. I feel that these ideas are unimportant in the real world. I understand the author had passion for these topics, however, most people are not concerned with such issues. I feel a more applicable article could have been composed instead of this one. Although, I cannot dictate what others decide to write about, I feel that many other audiences in the class will have the same opinion as me. I feel that the author is also somewhat bias. He strongly focuses on these points, but some of the reasonings seem unrelated. The one I included about the organic and inorganic wastes proves this point well. A machine does not have to have both components to function. Not to mention that these series are fictional, and create any reality they want. If someone wants to write about fictional aspects in movies, they could spend a lifetime doing so. However, little will be gained from these writings. Because at the end of the day, these ideas are fictional and do not claim to be reality.
In conclusion, I did not enjoy this article too much. I also feel it was a waste of time, because it taught me nothing of value. I would much rather read about something that is not fiction. I like to learn at least one thing new when I research, however, I was not granted this opportunity within this article.
